BANGKOK, 24 August 2019 (NNT) - Perpetrators of violence in southern border provinces are known to use mobile phone SIM cards from outside the provinces and from neighbouring countries to trigger explosive devices. Some of these SIM cards have been found to have been purchased with only a registered personal email address. The Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) now requires all SIM cards in the area to be registered with the owner’s facial image and identity by 31st October, and has launched a registration service via mobile application.

ISOC Region 4 has issued a new requirement for mobile users outside the three southern border provinces, who may be traveling into the area, asking them to have their SIM card registered with their facial image and other identification by 31st October, after which date all services for unregistered SIM card in the area will be suspended.

The ISOC spokesperson Maj Gen Thanathip Sawangsaeng said today that ISOC Region 4 and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has agreed to develop an application allowing mobile users outside the three southern border provinces to register their SIM card themselves before travelling into the area.

The ISOC and NBTC are now developing the application, and will be informing mobile users regarding the new requirement and the new registration application for the convenience of villagers and travelers.

"Perpetrators"

The Thai military cannot admit to the concept of an internal insurgency against the Thai-Buddhist government.

To do so in the case of the Muslim insurgency in the South is to admit that the Kingdom of Thailand forcibly colonized a sovereign kingdom and relegated its culture, religion and traditions to the manner of second class citizens.

Every new act of control by the military imposed over the southern provinces is just one more act of retaliation to control the predominant southern Muslim population.
