3 red-shirt leaders ordered to pay 19.3 million baht compensation for damage caused during 2010 protests

 

 

United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) chairman Jatuporn Promphan and two former red-shirt leaders, Natthawut Saikua and Arisman Pongruangrong, have been ordered by the Supreme Court to collectively pay 19.3 million baht compensation for the destruction by fire of a building in downtown Bangkok during the red-shirt protests against the Abhisit administration in 2010.

 

The Supreme Court’s verdict, which was read on August 22nd at the Civil Court, was disclosed on Sunday by Democrat party spokesman Ramet Wattanachaweng, who said he was assigned by Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, former Democrat leader, to attend the court hearing on his behalf.

 

The lawsuit was initiated by executives of the ULC Software Company, located on Ratchaprarop Road, against 11 defendants, including former prime minister Abhisit, former deputy prime minister Suthep Thaugsuban, the Defence and Finance ministries, the army, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, former Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paripatra and the three UDD leaders.

A lot of problems foreigners are having now are related to the suppression of the democracy activists. In general the military mindset, is barely fit to wage wars successfully and totally unfit to run a country. Just look at south America...a whole semi continent corrupt to the core, inefficient, broke and in despair. The future of Thailand. Never, in the history of Thai Coups has the coup interfered with fun especially for foreigners.  What is happening now would have been unthinkable in the past. I am so glad I lnow it from the old days.

So, all 8 defendants connected with the 'yellow' Abhisit administration and the military were deemed innocent but the 3 red shirts were guilty? Could there possibly be some bias here? The headline somehow fails to mention this anomaly, and also gives no indication of whether the unfortunate people who lost their businesses will ever get this money if the 3 accused say they dont have 19.3 million baht.

Who told the people to bring gasoline and burn down the city? Abhisit? Sure not!

The red mob sponsor can easily pay those couple of millions from the kitty.

It's time that all the court cases against these accused terrorists continue so that they will go to jail.

Indeed, they were openly encouraging people to bring gasoline so they could burn Bangkok down. They deserve all the get and far more.

It has never been proven that the protesters, whether red or yellow, set fire to this building.
On the other hand, serious suspicions have often been made;
it would be the owner of the place who would have ordered that one "fires" there in order to touch substantial royalties coming from the insurances.

Did the relatives of the 90 shot dead by the army, some sheltering in a wat, get any compensation?

we often read more than 90 deaths;
the unofficial number is over 700 dead

In addition, the occupants of three army helicopters that were shot dead ( except a journalist ) on the Burmese border in Kanchanaburi province may be added some months after the end of the clash in Bangkok.
But there, I enter a highly sensitive subject; we can not talk about it on this forum.

Not often the court verdict is based on circumstantial evidence without inference but it happened. ????

There is prove certain people publicly called on the red shirts to bring petroleum with them to "burn Bangkok down". Of course, those fires in response to that instruction may have been pure coincidence!

Do you have any evidence for that? Are you included all deaths?

As you correctly stated your case that 'instruction may have been pure coincidence' or in legal terms called circumstantial evidence. You need direct evidence; don't you think so? Just for the sake of comparison, Suthep as head of CRES ordered live rounds to be used and there were 90+ killed by the military. He and Ahbisit were not indicted. See the difference how the justice system works in a rather predictable manner.

..and not about the other 8 yellow-tainted, some elected, some in combat fatigues co-defendants who all got a free pass.

I like how the article and several poster omit the context of the fact that the Democrats were only in power because the military had ousted the democratically elected government in a coup. When the military violates your democratic rights with violence, you should respond with violence.

It is still very surprising that Abhisit who was Prime Minister and gave the order to the army to shoot real bullets making more than 90 dead get whitened ...
