Safest Thai airport immigrations?

Featured Replies

I am looking at a trip to Yangon, Myanmar this year. This is a new trip for me and by the look of the geography it looks like a land border crossing will be non-ideal as it's 290km from Thailand at the nearest point.

I am in Pattaya and although I hear Utapao immigration is good, I don't think there is a Utapao to Yangon flight. So I will need to find a flight from another Thai airport that has decent immigration for the return trip. I'll probably be returning with a tourist visa, although I may also use this route for an ED visa in the future.

Anyone know of a good airport for the immigration check? I hear BKK and DMK are both high risks. Am open to going anywhere in Thailand though, as long as it is workable. I may even be open to a long land based journey.

Most likely, I will exit from DMK to Yangon and return from Yangon to a good city, then flying to Utapao (if lucky) or DMK before busing home.

BritTim posted a helpful reply elsewhere so this is now my default option as I continue to see what other options are available.

Yangon has historically been a good place to apply. You need a Myanmar visa (eVisa online is easy). If desired, you can return via VIP overnight bus to Myawaddy, crossing into Thailand at Maesot. Maesot airport with frequent flights to Bangkok is near the border.

Of course, a lot of changes have happened recently at various consulates. Although there are no bad reports yet from Yangon, there are no guarantees in the current climate.

You could also fly from Yangon to Tachileik and cross right into Mae sai. Tickets are about 5000 baht but it could be worth the peace of mind.

If not then I’d fly to Chiang Mai and make sure it’s direct.

All advice depends on your history of time spent inside Los. More importantly time spent outside Thailand. You have not provided any.

You can also fly direct from Yangon to Chiangmai with Bangkok Airways or Air Asia.

Is Chiang Mai airport immigration decent?

I've been in Thailand 5 years mainly on ED visas. My current passport shows a tourist visa from Vientiane and an ED visa also from Vientiane. It's about half full

I can't answer on that. I am on Non O multi so never had any issue with immigration whatsoever.
Just mentioned this route from Yangon as it is direct and convenient to reach Thailand. It's a 50 minutes flight. I have done it few times (with Bangkok Airways only) while I was based in Yangon. It's a daily flight leaving Yangon at 13h00

By safe do you mean lax immigration procedures? I've never had a problem flying into Swampy on visa exempt. Every three weeks on average and staying for 2 weeks over the last five years.

Living here on Ed visas may be a problem at any airport. I don't think you will find the answer you are seeking here.
