BANGKOK (NNT) - The Department of Probation has displayed a record of its 40-year performance. Meanwhile, the Minister of Justice has stated that he will ensure equal access to the justice process.

Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin opened an event to mark the 40th anniversary of the Department of Probation which highlights its 40-year performance and creates a forum to exchange knowledge and experience among personnel and experts.

The minister said the Ministry of Justice focuses on providing fairness, and equal access to the judicial process without leaving anyone out of the picture. The probation system therefore, is one of the systems that is important for remediation and providing offenders with an opportunity to become good persons without having to go to prison. Mental development, attitude adjustment and vocational training allows such people to take care of themselves and their families in the future.

As for the progress of checking the effectiveness of electronic monitoring (EM) wrist bracelets, a fact-finding committee is currently checking if the contract should be revised or if any aspect should be canceled. The procedure is being undertaken in accordance with the facts and it is expected not to take long to complete.

Mr Prasarn Mahaleetrakul, Director-General of the Department of Probation, revealed that he had attended a meeting with the inspection committee on August 13. The meeting agreed that if the EM bracelets have faults, the contracted company must amend them according to the terms of reference. It is expected that a clear conclusion will be drawn in September. Initially, the Probation Department has instructed probationers to wear an EM ankle bracelet instead of an EM wrist bracelet. However, some of the probationers are actors and actresses so they are required to submit a report before they are allowed to wear an EM wrist bracelet.
