Bangkokians beware! 4K quality cameras will catch red light jumpers 24 hours a day

If you went through a red light in Bangkok yesterday chances are that a fine is already on the way to your house. 

 

The fancy new system to catch red light jumpers at 30 intersections came in yesterday. 

 

Pol Maj-Gen Jirasan Kaewsaeng-ek - a deputy commissioner in the capital - was guest of honor at a ceremony to launch the new system as it was revealed just how many Bangkokians flout the law. 

 

4K quality cameras can take pictures 24 hours a day - fines will be sent to the addresses of violators. 

 

Jirasan admitted that jumping red lights was bad in the capital. He said that 1,932 people were fined in July but this is just the tip of a much bigger iceberg. 

 

A trial of the cameras revealed 22,260 red light jumpers in just 15 days from August 1st to 14th. 

 

There were 3,082 at the Ratchada/Rama IV intersection alone. 

 

Fines can be up to 1,000 baht but the met police have kindly announced an "introductory offer" of just 500 baht at first. 

 

Fines can be paid through Krung Thai bank's KTB Netbank system.

Already the Police can't handle or don't want to handle TM30s. They are going to need a huge staff to handle all the documentation. At the lights at Rama IV where the expressway passes over at each change of the lights about 100 motorcycles jump the lights. Good luck to them with that. Or maybe they will only concentrate on the cars and leave the crazy motorcyclists alone.

Amazing Thailand. Proud officers showing that they have just introduced technology used in many other countries for the last 30 years or more. Here in Australia and I'm sure elsewhere the cameras are programmed into your cars SatNav to remind you. There are signs to warn you of the cameras as well so if you run a red light then you are just a fool. The red light cameras here also detect your speed so if you run a red light while exceeding the speed limit you will get a speeding fine as well. Hopefully the Thai officers manage to get the revenue and spend it on more cameras. I think they are a deterrent as well as speed cameras for most people.

Which are the junctions with cameras? Can anyone list them?

If they are only used for speeding and red lights then I don't have a problem. If they are used for yellow/orange/amber then that is wrong.

A promotion for fines, this is only possible in Thailand, a fine for this type of crime should be much higher.

How about cameras to detect police taking bribes?

For how long the camaras will last?

As long the law enforcers do not enforce the laws strictly, people will not change.

More drivers will paint their licence plates white so they don't get picked up on camera.

This is a two-part scheme (or should be).

1. Catch red light runners

2. Pay the fines or else!!

What about enforcing the law that a car or motorcycle with no plates number cannot use the public roads and can be impounded by the police. This is easy to control with road block checkpoint.  Many of them do not even have the compulsory  insurance and run red lights without care.

Just think there will be a lot of vehicles with dodgy number plates or at the very least unreadable ones .easy to do . 

No, it’s going to catch someone who’s 90% of the way through the intersection that they should have easily been able to get through but couldn’t because some idiot in front of them did something stupid to make them stop, like making a right turn in front of oncoming traffic.

They are also used for everybody that comes to a complete stop . . . with the front bumper 6" over the line.  I know several people that have gotten these and were surprised.

Some hi tech home security systems are going to be installed shortly lol.

And how would they know who is driving the car, it does't need to be the owner of the of the car in the drivers seat ? I assume they can't held the car owner responsible for a traffic violation like this if they can't identify the driver, and what is going to happened the the new point system is introduced later this year. This will be a tricky one. 

That's good, now all they have to do is find a way to make those that survive pay their fines.

Just as well invest in modern technology since the police cannot get away from their perch and enforce the laws.

They mail the ticket to the address on file for the vehicle, and if you don’t pay it, you can’t renew the registration when it comes due.

And how many who ride the bikes Aren't the Owners /or the person it is registered to  ?,,, there will be some trouble .  

Have they gotten the 1 million unpaid tickets yet?
