if one is a digital nomad applying for a new USA passport, should one put "unemployed" for one's occupation ?

or should one instead mention one's digital-nomad-type job, even if one might not be adhering to all employment regulations (work permits, etc.) ?

i sort of wonder if putting "unemployed" as a long-term "tourist" in one's 30s might be problematic.

A passport usually lasts 10 years. Are youu supposed to/likely to keep the same job for that length of time. And does it really matter.

Assuming your asking about applying for a SETV it doesn’t matter how you describe your occupation, they won’t check. Personally I wouldn’t put unemployed; self-employed would be better.

I don't think it would really matter what you put in the space on the application form.

Other than the consular officer accepting your application and possibley a person at the center that issues them would ever see what you put on the form.

Self-employed is supposed to be fine - I used that for a renewal on DS82, Q15 one time, or even something generic like "Marketing", or "Sales". I would leave Employer (Q16) blank.
