BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment continues to increase the number of green areas outside the protected forest area "Precious Wood Community - Family Forest under the Biodiversity-based Economic Development Organization (BEDO) Concept” to increase forest areas nationwide to 55 percent of land cover as determined in the government’s plan.

Mr. Wijarn Simachaya, MNRE Permanent Secretary, opened the fourth Road Show event to raise awareness of the operation to increase green areas outside the conservation area "Precious Wood Community - Family Forest under the BEDO Concept" organized by the Biodiversity-based Economy Development Office. It was attended by representatives of 16 partner agencies of the "Preciouse Wood Community - Family Forest under the BEDO Concept" who resolved to proceed with the campaign to develop green areas outside conservation areas.

Mr Wijarn said encouraging people to grow different types of trees especially economic woods outside the protected forest area, will create a source of raw materials for further development into goods or products and services, in accordance with the BEDO Concept. If this project continues to be expanded throughout the country, it will improve the quality of life of villagers and their self-reliance and also lead to forest restoration and conservation to increase the area of forest nationwide to 55 percent as sought in the government’s policy.

Currently, 248 BioEconomy branded products with a market value of 25 million baht, have been introducd from 2013-2019.

I am in favor of green areas, but they need to take into consideration the unique culture of the Thai people before proceeding. Before you plant trees here, you need to teach the people not to cut them down, burn them down, poison them. Take a drive from Bangkok to Laos. May not see a single mature tree of any size from horizon to horizon the whole way. That is truly shocking. The people here are simply not ready for trees and green areas. This destruction must end before the planting begins.

Green areas provide good camouflage for dumped rubbish and unwanted goods.

Maybe it sounds better in Thai but Thailand really is the hub of crappy slogans.
