BANGKOK, 10 September 2019(NNT) - Enacting urgent guidelines to help consumers after the recent rise in prices of glutinous rice due to a shortage of produce after the drought crisis and the end of the harvest season, the Ministry of Commerce is accelerating production of the first lot of bagged glutinous rice which will be launched at a cheaper price in the Pracharat Blue Flag market on September 11, 2019.

Mr. Jurin Laksanawisit, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, said initially the Ministry of Commerce will focus on helping low-income people in the northern, northeastern and central regions of Thailand as glutinous rice is popular in these areas. Pracharat blue flag shops will be used as distribution centers for bagged glutinous rice.

The Department of Internal Trade has cooperated with the private sector to accelerate production of the first lot of bagged glutinous rice which will be launched in the market on September 11, 2019, to help alleviate the plight of people who normally consume glutinous rice during this period.

Initial production will be 200,000 – 300,000 bags of glutinous rice of two and five kilograms. It is expected to be sold at 35 baht per kilogram as opposed to the current average market price of about 50 baht per kilogram.

Private companies that have signed a contract with the Department of Internal Trade are expected to be able to produce 200,000-300,000 bags of glutinous rice by September 17 and widely distribute bagged glutinous rice to reduce the cost of living, via the Pracharat blue flag stores this month.

By next week, the Department of Internal Trade will distribute glutinous rice among Pracharat blue flag shops in Pathum Thani as a first step. The Department of Internal Trade will also accelerate the departure of a procession of vehicles distributing products in various areas nationwide.

Both bag sizes of sticky rice are being sold at prices lower than those of the market by 10-15 baht per kilogram, in order to reduce the cost of living for people due to the recent rise in prices of glutinous rice.

So are the Government taking a loss on every bag, how are they

able to sell it 10-15 THB a Kg. below market price.maybe not the

same quality.

Hard to imagine private companies signing a contract where they lose 15 baht per KG. So I guess the Government must be subsidising the private company producers. Either that or like you say it is different/lower quality. Either way the private companies won't come out the losers.

Price at the farms was 10Bht/Kg, they're claiming the drought doubled the price, so that would be 20Bht/Kg.

So @35Bht there's still a profit margin of 75%, if less then the 150% markup they really wanted.

It is "Private companies that have signed a contract with the Department of Internal Trade" to produce 200,000-300,000 bags of glutinous rice," not farmers. So these private companies may act as middlemen who will take their markup in sale to the government. That likely brings the retail price to or above market price.

In turn the government retails the rice at below market value, covering the difference as another subsidy. As a result the government distorts downward the cost of living (and inflation) for appearances sake.

Nor will anyone involved from the government come out losers.
