Army receives first 10 Stryker vehicles from U.S.

 

   

BANGKOK, 13 September 2019(NNT) - The Royal Thai Army has held a ceremony to receive the first 10 Stryker vehicles from an order for 70 from the U.S., which will be used in security operations in border areas and assisting the general public in cases of disaster.

 

Soldiers from the 11th Infantry Division’s Stryker Unit wearing field combat uniform joined the reception ceremony for the first 10 RTA ICV vehicles from the United States. In the ceremony, the U.S. Army Pacific Commanding General Gen Robert B. Brown, handed over the vehicles to the Royal Thai Army Commander in Chief Gen Apirat Kongsompong.

 

The Royal Thai Army has placed an order for 70 armored vehicles, using 2.86 billion baht from the central budget for 37 vehicles, and 850 million baht from the army’s budget for 10 vehicles, and has received sponsorship from the U.S. for 23 more vehicles. The procurement is being made under an FMS scheme, which is inclusive of the procurement of overall equipment, weapons, maintenance, and parts, as well as domestic and international training.

 

The Thai army chief said that the army has ordered four types of Stryker vehicles, including an ambulance version intended to help members of the general public affected by a natural disaster.

 

The U.S. Army Pacific chief said he has contributed to the establishment of Stryker units in the U.S., while the vehicles have been used practically in Iraq. The delivery of Stryker vehicles to Thailand will help with the country’s operations in various missions, such as crisis rescue and border security.

 

The delivering ceremony was also attended by military students from training centers nationwide, as the army chief wants students to witness progress and learn about the Thai military’s history and loyalty to the nation’s main institutions first hand.

2.86 billion spent for easing Baht. They need to to spend more to weaken Baht. It is becoming excessively strong. 

when do the future drivers get trained on these before they cut loose on the roads?

At least the U.S. delivers quickly. 

Wont it take years before Thailand gets its first sub/ amphibious ship from China

How often are thesr really going to be used? When would troops have to be transported in armoured vehicles? Standard army trucks suffice and bigger capacity. Again, another stupid purchase by the Thai military gov't. Yes it still is a military gov't in all practical implications.

Smart governance . Give army whatever they want and army will be loyal forever .

 

smarter governance would have been to do the same for police and then you have full tight grip control 

The army chief said some of the Strykers were ambulance versions, useful for helping the public who have been driven over by the armoured versions during public unrest.

... and protects the troops inside, from flailed molotov durian cocktails...

The army is already well advanced with student training as regards aspects of military weaponry. Much of this is due to the previous coup leader PM Prayut's forward thinking and good work in having it included in the primary school curriculum.

The government is mostly army

He should teach them about the 5 hour defence of the nation to keep the Japs out, then the surrender, negotiation to keep the elites safe and allowing the Japs to use and abuse the peasants.

Well, makes more sense than those idiotic submarines and amphibious launch craft they're buying. If you were here during the flood in 2011, more of these type vehicles would have helped.

They will be used quite often.  They came with USB charging outlets.

Of course they were quick to deliver - hard cash for offloading surplus vehicles!

 

And before he gets too excited about the fact that they were used in Iraq, have a look at the amount of bolt on ceramic and slatted armour that was needed to give protection from rocket propelled grenades (RPGs) and IEDs (mines). They don't come with all that!
