Dhmo Pollution In Thailand

Everywhere I go I see DHMO used in large quantities in Thailand. There seems to be no way to avoid it - it is used in food production (even baby food), in households, as and industrial solvent, outdoors all round the place. I think there's no doubt about the dangers of DHMO - for those who don't know some of the dangers associated with DHMO are:

  • Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.
  • Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.
  • Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.
  • DHMO is a major component of acid rain.
  • Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.
  • Contributes to soil erosion.
  • Leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals.
  • Contamination of electrical systems often causes short-circuits.
  • Exposure decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.
  • Found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors and lesions.
  • Given to vicious dogs involved in recent deadly attacks.
  • Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere, and in hurricanes including deadly storms in Florida, New Orleans and other areas of the southeastern U.S.
  • Thermal variations in DHMO are a suspected contributor to the El Nino weather effect.

So what can we do about this? Isn't it about time that Thai lawmakers take a tough stance against DHMO (Dihydrogen Monoxide) and outright ban it? Maybe good old Purachai can lead the crackdown on DHMO.

I see, so people have been warning about this dangerous substance before.

Btw, I thought Thailand was free of solid DHMO as I have mainly encountered it only in liquid and gas form. But yesterday I noticed that solid DHMO was for sale in my local 7-11. Don't know why but I guess those motorbike taxi guys on the corner use it for something. Maybe to enhance the effect of their whisky as I once heard about people mixing it with alcohol. (I wouldn't even dream about doing that...)
