Custom's Duty Packages Delivered By Post From Overseas

Ordered 2 DVDs total cost $29.00 US. Last sat (19/3) postman delivers and want me to sign customs form saying duties due is 1100 baht and each DVD valued at 3000 baht. Told him was not going to pay and return the items since duties were more than the purchase price. Postman left and returned to his other deliveries

Then received from post office (Mon 21/3) notice that package is waiting to be picked up. Went, got the 2 DVDs, no duty paid or asked for.

Scam?, thinking the postal employees can collect a few baht to subsidize the weekend bash.

No, it's customs. Often, if you refuse to pay the stuff comes back with no additional charge. I believe the duty is 'semi' legitimate but arbitrarily applied.

I buy lots of things online and get them delivered here in Thailand. I have never been asked to pay anything at all. I do make a habit of tipping the postie 50 baht each time he drops a package off so maybe that has something to do with it, Worth a try I suppose
