Pelosi says public opinion shifting in support of impeachment inquiry

AUSTIN, TX (Reuters) - U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Saturday that public opinion is now on the side of an impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump following the release of new information about his conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Pelosi this week announced her support for an investigation after the surfacing of a whistleblower complaint that said Trump appeared to solicit a political favor from Ukraine's president aimed at helping him be re-elected next year.

Pelosi for months took a cautious approach in weighing the calls of other Democratic House members to launch impeachment proceedings against Trump, which grew louder after former Special Counsel Robert Mueller testified on July 24 about his probe of Trump and Russian interference in the 2016 election.

“In the public, the tide has completely changed; it could change now - who knows - but right now after seeing the complaint and the IG (Inspector General) report and the cavalier attitude the administration had towards it, the American people are coming to a different decision," Pelosi said at a journalism event hosted by the Texas Tribune news website.

She added that her resistance to holding an impeachment inquiry quickly evolved from urging that fellow Democrats remain cautious of the political fallout ahead of next year’s elections to full steam ahead as details emerged of Trump’s dealings with Ukraine’s leader.

“A president of the United States would withhold military assistance paid for by taxpayers to shake down the leader of another country unless he did him a political favor - that is so, so clear,” Pelosi said.

In a July 25 telephone call between Trump and Zelenskiy, the U.S. leader asked his counterpart to launch an investigation of Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, who had served on the board of a Ukrainian energy company.

Both Bidens have denied any wrongdoing.

Trump has blasted the impeachment inquiry, arguing that he did nothing wrong and accusing Democrats of launching a politically motivated "witch hunt."

Lawmakers in the Democratic-led House of Representatives are investigating concerns that Trump's actions have jeopardized national security and the integrity of U.S. elections.

The impeachment inquiry has cast a new pall over Trump's presidency just months after he emerged from the shadow cast by Mueller's investigation.

“If the facts are persuasive to the American people, they may be to some Republicans," Pelosi said during the event.

Pelosi would not forecast how long it may take for the House to complete any possible impeachment proceedings against Trump.

“It will take as long as the Intelligence Committee needs to follow all the facts,” she said.

Several Democratic presidential candidates attended the three-day event in Austin, including Mayor Pete Buttigieg, former Representative Beto O’Rourke, Senator Amy Klobuchar and former Housing Secretary Julian Castro, all of whom agreed with Pelosi that the campaign to push Trump from office must focus on policies and not impeachment.

While some polls have shown Americans are split on supporting impeachment, Castro, who served under former President Barack Obama, said he thinks the public will increasingly back the inquiry.

“Like in Watergate, after more evidence gets out there ... you’ll see more people of different political stripes start to support it,” Castro said at the event, referring to moves in 1974 to impeach former President Richard Nixon.

Nixon resigned before impeachment proceedings were launched.

Why do Americans support such a moron?

I understand that they didn't want Hillary and I understand that Pence is not exactly a good replacement.

But enough it enough! Get rid of that guy before it gets even worse.

There are idiots in all countries in this world.

But in other countries people don't vote for them to become their leaders.

Amazing USA. The land of the ***

And with public opinion come votes in the Senate.

I’ve said for a long while, Trump needs to focus on prison reforms.

New Yorker, please enlighten me!

At least two-thirds of the Senate, or 67 members, must vote to convict the president, resulting in his removal from office. Currently, the Senate has 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats and two independents who usually vote with the Democrats.

GOOD luck with that ????

Which is why the swing in public opinion matters.

I have no axe to ground, but my reading of the story is through Bidens influence his son ended up with a 30 million dollar contract, so which is the truth?

Of COURSE Biden's son got the position for having that particular last name. The point is, it wasn't illegal, and it recently came out that Trump's advisers told him months ago there was no story here. Trump just bulled his way ahead as he always does and committed treason by using the weight of his office to strong arm a desperate country to do his bidding or they wouldn't get their hundreds of million$ in military aid.

It's called classic deflection. Certainly, it's not a flattering photo of Madam Speaker, but when you have no facts to use, you deflect, ignore, lie, deny or obfuscate. Those are the five tactics every person uses who can't reply with facts. I'll let YOU work out the acronym.

Figuring out the acronym reminded me of who this thread is really about:biggrin:

Unless the economy complete tanks in America Trump will win. The democrats have shown no unity and look crazier than Trump. The constant attacks on Trump will only help him win the election thanks to the sympathy votes.

Democrats haven't shown any achievements to improve the life of the average American all they do is focus on attacking Trump and fighting each other for the craziest socialist award.

At the end of the day all the fluff issues mean nothing people want jobs and security for their families. The democrats are running a campaign on socialism working class people know it doesn't work and that it will come with huge tax increases. Only the unemployed and students will want that working class people don't want to see their hard earned money go to the government.

Ask yourself honestly,  despite all the accusations thrown at Trump would you risk your families financial future voting for a party running a socialist platform that will kill  jobs and increase taxes?

Anyone saying they know who will win the next election even who will be running has ZERO credibility. You don't know. NOBODY knows. Things have changed radically in the last week and some people are so arrogant to suggest they know what will happen in November 2020. RIDICULOUS.

This is utter rubbish and people on here are so full of hate they fail to even acknowledge the facts. 1. They called for inpeachment before seeing any evidence (wishing it so doesn't make it so) 2. Trump released the phone call in total with nothing retracted. 3. Trump never said any of the things that they believed (hoping doesn't make it so). I can't believe the deluded are still going on about the muller report. A wich hunt that now should see the orcastrators of the phoney report in prison and Obama in court (spying on a political adversary, lying to a judge). OMG! Democrats have no bound's to their hypocrisy!

Trump hollering about Biden's son getting a job because of family: really? I mean, REALLY?

Trump backers: Did Jared get his multi-task position because of his years of experience in diplomacy, that he was the most capable person? Ivanka? Her patents and side deals?

Trump is still hauling in millions because of his position aka emollients. Not as much as he would like (greed knows no bounds) & his supporters say "but he doesn't take a paycheck from US gov as Pres". Those types you really need to look into. Pay peanuts compared to what he gets as his brand. Manafort didn't take pay as campaign manager. At least not from RNC. How'd that work out?

The phone call transcript was massively damning. Hard core 45 fans famously are willfully blind to such things. They are a minority. About 35 percent.

And that 35% is shrinking with alarming speed (alarming, at least, to Trump supporters).
