Prime Minister Hun Sen yesterday said that the three-day Water Festival will be celebrated as planned despite Sam Rainsy’s threats to gather millions of people in Phnom Penh to unseat the government. Speaking during a graduation ceremony on Koh Pich in Phnom Penh yesterday, Mr Hun Sen said that the government will not scrap the upcoming water festival over the coup threats.

“We will celebrate water festival on November 10, so the people will come on November 9. Even though the level of water in the river is one meter lower in Phnom Penh, we still hold boat races and also arrest those people [traitors],” he said. “They announced that they will overthrow us on November 9. This is a coup plot and the Ministry of Justice has laid a charge of coup attempt. They are preparing forces to overthrow [the government],” he added.

The government has announced that the Water Festival this year will take place from November 10 through 12; it is the biggest event in the Kingdom and millions of people will come to Phnom Penh to watch boat races and music performances. Mr Hun Sen warned that the government would crack down on “traitors” who attempt to change the constitutional monarchy if they join the protest.
