Incredible that some find it difficult to comprehend this...

Is it that only 'my home' country's economy should flourish?

Do you feel better now?

Well, from what I understand, and often gets little mention...there were massive inflows for the buying of short term govt bonds. Demand for buying these, in baht, drove the baht price up, as is the case for the GBP, due to the need to use the English financial system in GBP. Now the govt has finally made some restrictions on these inflows - withholding taxes etc the demand should (And as I understand it, has) subside, at least partially.

Nobody ever went broke underestimating the sense of good taste of the American public

Wages in Thailand increased to 14353.55 THB/Month in the second quarter of 2019 from 13995.56 THB/Month in the first quarter of 2019. Wages in Thailand averaged 9684.42 THB/Month from 1999 until 2019, reaching an all time high of 14353.55 THB/Month in the second quarter of 2019 and a record low of 6344 THB/Month in the first quarter of 2000.

This subject has been talked to death in the last few days alone.

But I find the above surprising...a Thai office worker getting paid in USD... Next thing we'll be hearing they are getting paid in GBP...some other currency?

Thai Baht strong because Bank of Thailand prefers to take in hot money inflows from foreign (Chinese) buyers.  It bolsters foreign currency reserves--and lines some pockets.  They don't really care about expats, western tourism or exports.  And this suits their master, China, just fine.

Girls working in bars still get around 9,000 baht (300 USD) but boosted by 'extras'.

The Thai baht is strong due to the Thai economy - GDP, Capital inflows, low inflation, massive foreign reserves, etc etc.

Nothing to do with the inflation (Around 1% by year)

Trying to explain with some simple things

the value of a currency is based on few elements

(Rationals or not) and one of them is the country's ''value''

determined by the global wealth supposed to guarantee the currency.

The global wealth include gold and foreign currency reserves.

Thailand has a lot of foreign currency reserves, brought by tourists but

mostly by ''investissors'' (They try to escape the taxes in their country and\or it's money laundering, and Thailand seems to be a safe a easy place for them)

nothing to do with a real ''good'' economy

if the real thai economy was so ''good'', why to launch the 1000 bahts scheme ''chim.shop.chai''?

''The new study indicates that despite significant growth in average wealth, which increased from US$3,350 per adult in 2000 to US$9,969 in 2018, millions of Thais have been mired in grinding poverty while the richest citizens have kept their stranglehold on opportunities for personal wealth creation'' (19 dec 2018)

yeah they should be smart and vote in the democrats that will destroy america instead!! Why would you want a country to flourish when you can just usher in socialism and destroy it ????????

Wasn't there an article a little while ago about Kingpower buying up property in the UK?  I'm sure other rich Thai families are doing similar.  Once they are done then the baht will go back down.

Try telling that to Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Netherlands...total nonsense.

oh yeah, here are numbers gdp growth down from 5 to 7% to 2.7 %, export growth down from 3 to 4 % to minus 2 to 0 %. now they want allow thais to stockpile debts externally, then it goes like 1996. wondering how long before moodys, fitch revise their grading ??

roobaa01

Budget surplus , huge foreign reserves and capital inflow is why this is happening .

how true or inflated any of the above is anyone’s guess

So you are upset that the Thai's are finally making a fare wage?  Think a little bit more globally, and a little less about the past and yourself..

1100 dollars is about 33000 baht , there are enough people who work in an office that make this a month .
