geovalin
The Thai retailing giant Big C has opened its first supermarket in Cambodia. . Big C Poipet had its soft opening on Saturday, the company announced on its Facebook page. “A soft opening for the Poipet Hypermarket was held under our vision to be the leading Thai retailer with customers at heart,” the announcement read. The soft opening comes just eight months after the Council for the Development of Cambodia approved the project. Poipet’s newest shopping destination sits on more than two hectares of land in Kbal Spean I village. It is not known when the grand opening will be held. The event elicited a great deal of excitement, with people from all walks of life crowding the supermarket. The opening made Cambodia the fourth country to host a Big C branch. In addition to Thailand, Big C already has a presence in Vietnam and Laos. Big C focuses on mid-to-low income customers with a wide selection of goods at affordable prices. read more https://www.khmertimeskh.com/50648873/thailands-big-c-opens-first-supermarket-in-cambodia/
legend49
Big C focuses on mid-to-low income customers with a wide selection of goods at affordable prices. ( Really?) Why then have imported items stayed at same price for last 9 months as the Baht climbs high?

Burma Bill
Quote:- "Big C Poipet had its soft opening on Saturday" Interesting, many people in Poi-Pet keep money in pocket for the gambling tables - not to spend in a Supermarket! Siem Reap and/or Phnom Penh would have been a better choice. MAKRO has recently opened a new supermarket in Siem Reap.
Sheryl
Makro is also in Phnom Penh. Tkough way out in Toul Kork. I expect the choice of Poipet was for ease of overland supply. The gamblers in the casinos there are not usually Poipet residents but rather Thais. Poipet does not actually have that many permanent residents, mostly transients coming and going for trade, work or more nefarious purposes. But it is accessible to other parts of Banteay Meanchey and also to Battambang, many ordinary Cambodians in those areas have been coming across to Aran on weekends to shop at Tesco, so presumably that crowd will go to the Big C in Poipet.
