Food exports to EU in trouble in wake of Zero Palm Policy

Well soon the EU will also ban all crops which are polluting the environment by burning land or anything else.

So thai sugarcane will get a ban and maybe even the rice if they still burn the fields to grow it.

It's only this financial pressure that will bring change as it has with the fishing industry.

Palm oil is the least environmentally unfriendly oil crop. Replacing palm oil with other oils requires an additional 50 million hectares of farm land. That’s more than the entire Borneo rainforest that’s left. So I think the orangutans should be pleased humans only used around 5% of the original Borneo rainforest for palm oil plantations.

The difference is  that  the areas  of land that are  being devastated  can  not  sustain other  crops.

In most  cases  the deforestation is  having a detrimental impact  on traditional  crop land  due to  erosion  and  water course  silting that  reduces   food  production.  Palm oil  is  not a  primary food. Which among  other  facts is why Orangutans  are  not thriving  on it !

When you fly to Malaysia you can see palm oil palms for about an hour nonstop while flying above the plantations...in the past there was jungle but the 'green' plans from Europe to use it as a biodiesel made the Malay built these huge plantations. And now they just block it likt it never was their fault.

What's irritating is the way they include palm oil in so called "condensed milk", maybe the Thai population are just cholesterol junkies?

It's also in real cream 'butter' , in all of the brands sold in thailand except elle and vire from france which now costs 160 baht, 1.6 euro in french supermarkets.

What's wrong with palm oil?

Indonesia is being deforested faster than any other country in the world, and it has everything to do with one product: palm oil.
Large areas of tropical forests and other ecosystems with high conservation values have been cleared to make room for oil palm plantations, essentially killing the biodiversity of the ecosystems that they replace.  Many plantations in Southeast Asia are on peat soils, which until recently were covered by peat swamp forests. The drainage of these carbon-rich organic soils for plantations is causing massive greenhouse gas emissions.
The cheapest and fastest way to clear land for plantations is slash and burn. Fires in Indonesia produce some of the world’s worst pollution, sending suffocating smog to cities hundreds of miles away in Malaysia and Singapore.
Clearing rainforest to make way for plantations has taken a heavy toll on local communities, destroyed natural habitats for endangered species, and become a critical factor in climate change. Replacing natural forests with palm oil plantations vastly diminishes the ability of vegetation to capture and store carbon dioxide. It’s estimated that deforestation contributes up to 20 percent of global warming.
Indonesia and Malaysia account for around 87% of global palm oil production and the demand for the cheap oil continues to grow.
According to WWF (World Wildlife Fund) there are approximately 20 million hectares of abandoned land in Indonesia that could be used for palm oil plantations, however, many palm oil companies are tied in with logging firms.   Timber is extremely valuable, therefore clearing virgin forest they get money twice, once for the timber and again for the produce from the oil palm trees.
Other issues surrounding unregulated palm production are human rights issues, slash and burn practices to clear land, illegal land grabs, child labour and leakage of chemicals into water supply.
Indonesia averaged 917,000 ha of natural forest loss per year between 2009 and 2013, more than half of which was outside concessions

Natural, dense rainforest is cleared to plant a few palm trees in nice straight rows, all equally spaced the same distance apart. So it is certainly not misleading.

Palm oil is not a healthy product to use anyway, but it’s cheap, that’s why the manufacturers use it......and why there is row after row of the stuff on Tesco shelves and only a few bottles of other vegetable oils. It’s taken a while but I have finally got the missus not to buy palm oil.

yes every palm tree needs to be cleared at an 3 meter circle to produce palm oil

Knocked me down with a feather. Palm oil comes from palm trees; right. Deforestation seem bit misleading.

Do you really think its about the mythical "Climate Change" the naturally occurring cycle that is 98% controlled by the sun and less than 1% caused by humans? Its all about money and tax.

nothing like the illiterate & the ignorant to show us why we have  palm oil trees as far as the eye can see in Malaysia

Thailand not so much

but its a lazy high yield crop which is why the Malay love it work shy in Malaysia is a way of life

so they bring in 1 million illiterates from Bangladesh or any other sympathetic muslim country

Najib even gave them voting rights when he was trying to rig the elections

The jury is still out on PO but I think its an unhealthy oil and it will take a few decades to show just like trans/hydrogenated fats.(putting the word TRANS in any post is always temptation for a katoey joke)

I buy nothing with either

Looking at how overweight Malays are its all oil and sugar

the condensed never seen a cow milk

Im sure Thai women are getting bigger too of course that is income related as well

There wont be an oversupply, 1.5 Chinese 1.5 billion Indians

and greedy corporations

we can only hope that the ban slows it down but not by much

It was also very stupid from the lefties in Europe to think that palmoil could be grown without plantations. It was in the time when they made us believe that there was a huge hole in the ozon layer above australia which miraculously has disappeared by itself, same as the acid rain which would kill all our tree's.

Where did they think the malay would get all the palmoil from? If they just had a tiny bit of interest in it they could have gone there to see it themselves before placing huge orders for oil.

disgusting!

imagine you are industrially producing palm oil and did nothing wrong, growing palms only on designated areas, and now you can't sell your production anymore because OTHER PEOPLE were responsible for deforestation?

Sure they can still sell it, or just mix it with diesel and drive on it. Not every country is going for electric cars yet, many should be happy to have electricity these days.

Hypocrites they cut down 90% of their own forests for agriculture and then complain developing nations for doing the same.
They should clean up their own backyards first.
