Marrying again on Non-imm O

Featured Replies

10th October I divorced my wife after 28 yrs. I'm on a multi non-imm O visa which expires in April 2020.

Can I get married to someone else while on this visa?

If you have a visa from an embassy or consulate I see no reason for you to have a problem. A Amphoe will not care about your visa status when you register your new marriage.

I asked my gf to ask about this in Bangkok. IO said after the divorce my non-imm o  visa becomes invalid. I would have to leave within about 7 days and come back on a METV , marry then apply for a marriage extension. However how would the Amphoe know. Ask a different officer u will no doubt get a different answer. I would like to know more on this too.

Will the new marriage cert not raise eyebrows at extension or renewal time?

If you have a extension of stay based upon marriage it ends on the day the divorce is finalized.

A visa issued by a embassy or  consulate remains valid since it is not tied to you being married like an extension of stay is.

We are discussing visas issued by a embassy or consulate not extensions of stay issued by immigration.

Thanks Joe, just asking.

with respect, Joe, such a visa often (like mine) has the name of the wife written in by the consulate issuing. Is it not possible (rightly or otherwise) that an amphoe could simply 'cancel' the visa on the divorce completion?

An Amphoe cannot cancel a visa.

Even a immigration office cannot cancel a visa issued by an embassy or consulate. Only a high level immigration officers can cancel a visa and it has to be justified. Getting divorced would not be a valid reason to do it.

So for an extension of stay being cancelled after divorce finalized I would have to leave come in on another visa, marry then get the extension again. Suppose no way of doing this within Thailand.

It cannot be done while in the country.

If you had a valid reason to apply for different type of extension of stay it you would not have to leave the country. For example if you had child from your marriage you could apply for an extension based upon being their father.

Thank you . My daughter is in her twenties so I don't think that will work. Think I will have to navigate the awful evisa system back in the UK.
