I have been liaising with AXA - Global Healthcare in the U.K. to see what my options are for meeting the Compulsory Health Insurance requirements for long stay using my current Global Healthcare (excluding US) plan which offers £1m per annum of inpatient cover but no outpatient cover.

Whilst my plan could potentially be upgraded to include outpatients, the key thing, which does not really surprise me, is AXA - Global Healthcare have stated that they cannot sign/stamp any external documents for regulation purposes (I shared the Foreign Insurance Certificate required with them). They state this is the same in any country and any external document.

So, even if it is deemed International Healthcare Plans with the minimum levels of outpatient and inpatient cover, are acceptable to meet the new long stay Compulsory Health Insurance requirements, AXA - Global Healthcare will not sign the certificate which implies using one of their plans is not an option. They have said instead they will provide confirmation of cover which can be shared with Thai Immigration which I suspect they would not accept.

Other International Insurers will presumably take the same stance.

Some have apparently been willing to sign but balked at the reference to the Cabinet Resolution since they did not have a copy. TVF has now unearthed the original Thai language of the resolution, anyone in that situation could seek an official translation from a Thai Embassy or (if in Thailand) the MFA.

Won't help you with Allianz though. I take it you bought it directly? I know that some brokers in Thailand are trying to work with foreign insurers on this and related  issues for their clients.

Sheryl,

You provided it about two years ago but I can’t find it now.  Could you kindly tell me the name of the company that will insure people over seventy-five?  I sure hope that I will not have to buy the insurance because my Japanese National Health Insurance will cover emergency care over here but at the amount the care would cost in Japan.  So long as I can get on a plane after treatment, I don’t really need in-country insurance so I am taking my chances for now.

Thanks for your feedback Sheryl. I bought my Policy direct from AXA. I have been with them for nearly 20 years, firstly through U.K. Group Plans, then a U.K. individual policy and then via an individual International Policy when I moved to Thailand.

They have no links with AXA Thailand.

They can upgrade my plan to include outpatient cover but it means £3,500 of cover and my inpatient increasing from £1m to £1.5m. This is clearly expensive.

AXA Global will not change my Policy dates to match my annual extension dates. The only way they can do it is to cancel my existing policy and then set up a new policy. Existing underwriting terms cannot be transferred.

Given this, and they will not sign the required certificate, it seems I may have to take out a local plan to run alongside my existing International Plan.

Again, an expensive option but I do not want to cancel my existing Plan whereby pretty much everything is covered but may not be if I start a new Plan with another insurer.

AXA Global have said they are still selling many policies to people living in Thailand and I am the first person to raise these new requirements.
