"The monument was intended to bring good luck and fortune to local residents."

It brought not so much luck for the village chief.

Maybe a higher power was delivering a message,  Buddha's way of saying "him no good!"

I wish Buddha would enforce his rule "don't make statues or images of me" more frequently.

George Orwell would certainly be amused by this incident.

In Burmese Days he wrote about a local "boss" who was a ruthless piece of work, he would say he'd make up for his deeds by building temples ("merit making").

Consider this incident the reply "it doesn't work that way."

Pictures of temples and Buddha are always prominent in travel brochures.

Unquestionably, beyond a shadow of doubt, this will be harmful to Thailand's image.

One more slam for Thai tourism !

The family took the body to the temple to be held there for a religious ceremony.

They accepted the explanation that the death was an accident and did not request further investigations.

I'd kind of want to know who was responsible for the shoddy workmanship.  If only so they didn't get more contracts to build 16' Buddha's.
