The National Fisheries Association of Thailand (NFAT) is working with Bangkok Insurance to provide insurance to its members before the Fisheries Labour Protection Act comes into effect on November 18, Mongkol Sukcharoenkana, the association’s president, said on Tuesday (November 12).

Under the Act, boat owners must provide benefits to their employees.

“In accordance with draft announcement of the act, the Ministry of Labour explained that fishing boat employers can choose one of three ways to provide health and welfare benefits for their employees beyond working hours, namely by, buying insurance from private companies, registering employees with the social security system, and being responsible for the costs should any employees suffer accidents while working,” he explained.

NFAT recently informed its members in 22 provinces and 49 organizations that the association has coordinated with Bangkok Insurance to provide insurance for them.

The president explained that NFAT chose the insurance option to help its members save on paying out for accidental cases, and reduce burden of preparing documents for registering employees with the social security system. “The premium rate of the insurance is at most Bt800 per person per year,” he added.
