Report Expanded Maternal and Child Health Program Cuts Malnutrition in the Philippines
File photo for reference only In a landmark achievement for the Philippines, an expanded maternal and child health program has notably reduced child malnutrition rates, underscoring significant progress in the country's ongoing fight against hunger and undernutrition. Spearheaded by San Miguel Foods Inc. (SMFI), the "Happy si Mommy, Malusog si Baby" initiative is at the forefront of this success. Now supporting over 1,000 mother-and-child pairs across 24 barangays nationwide, the program has emerged as one of the nation’s most impactful community nutrition initiatives. Recent figures indicate that an impressive 89% of participating children are within normal height and weight ranges—a testament to the program's effectiveness. Moreover, the proportion of underweight children has dropped to a mere 2%, with only 9% still considered malnourished. These outcomes highlight the crucial role of targeted interventions during the First 1,000 Days of Life—identified by experts as a critical developmental phase with long-lasting health benefits. Initiated in 2022 with 254 mother-child pairs across nine pilot barangays, the program's rapid expansion now benefits over 400 families in Luzon, more than 300 in the Visayas, and around 250 in Mindanao. This growth is achieved through a collaborative effort involving key partners like the San Miguel Foundation, local government units, and private sector stakeholders. Together, they provide comprehensive support, which includes prenatal checkups, ultrasounds, maternal health education, and access to Mingo Meals—a specially formulated food designed to counteract malnutrition. Mingo Meals, the cornerstone of dietary support within the program, are developed by the Department of Science and Technology - Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) and produced by the Negrense Volunteers for Change Foundation. Composed of rice, mung beans, and moringa, these meals are nutritionally dense and crucial in supporting maternal and infant health in underserved regions. In 2024, San Miguel Foods extended its commitment to these communities by distributing an additional 3 to 6 months’ supply of Mingo Meals in new flavors that align with toddlers’ evolving taste preferences. Ramon S. Ang, the Chairman and CEO of San Miguel Corporation, emphasizes the importance of sustainable and long-term investments in grassroots health initiatives. "These are the kinds of outcomes we hope for when we commit to long-term, community-based work," he stated. Ang underscores the initiative's commitment to ensuring that vulnerable mothers and children receive continuous, rather than one-time, support. The initiative contributes to San Miguel’s broader sustainability objectives, which aim to enhance the lives of 15 million Filipinos by 2030. A critical component of the program is the empowerment and training of Barangay Health Workers (BHWs). To date, 102 BHWs have undergone training via DOST-FNRI-led webinars on vital topics such as breastfeeding, postpartum care, and early childhood nutrition. These trained health workers play a pivotal role as local champions, disseminating essential knowledge to participating mothers and ensuring the program's enduring success and widespread impact at the grassroots level. The expansion and results of the "Happy si Mommy, Malusog si Baby" initiative not only highlight the program's success in addressing child malnutrition but also reinforce the importance of strategic partnerships and community involvement in creating sustainable healthcare solutions. As the program continues to grow, it sets a meaningful precedent for health and nutrition initiatives across the region, offering hope and a healthier future for countless Filipino families.
