Are you sure it's not nitrous oxide?

Regardless, the Health Department chief's comments are enough to make anyone laugh

Tell me they mean helium and not hydrogen....

Your question provided the answer.

“If people do not know what type of gas the balloon is filled with, they should avoid being near balloons for their safety,” she said. “Moreover, if gas tanks are used at parties or events, they should be maintained in good condition, placed in an open area with good ventilation.”

Just ban hydrogen use in balloons.... simple !

No they are BUFFOONS ????

Back in the 80s @ Grateful Dead shows at Oakland Coliseum, you would see tanks of NO2 where people would fill up balloons for fun. ????

The hub of balloon deaths

But there’s no chance of a bright spark to set it off...

And silly me, I thought the headline was referring to those party balloons that, appropriately applied, make people laugh and happy .

Why not simple forbid the use of hydrogen in balloons and offer rewards for reporting offenders?????

Or as Basil would say : Sybil Fawlty from Torquay, .....

and the firecrackers, it is not dangerous?

Vietnam has banned them for many years .

Wrong department !

They fill balloons with hydrogen! No wonder this place is 'Amazing'!

I think walking across any road here is much more dangerous than balloons

Walking across any road, anywhere has potential danger.

Balloons are fine. Not many party-goes set fire to them. Where is the source of combustion. Oh wait cigarettes. There is the real danger?

There is a finite amount of Elemental Helium available.   It is not a gas that can be generated.    Once it is gone,   it will literally be "In the ether."

Hydrogen esp hydrogen sulfide, can be generated any number of ways and is explosive as can be and it stinks like rotten eggs and curry farts.

So the keywords here are Hydrogen, Helium, and ether,    None of these are as much fun as Nitrous Oxide (which is also as explosive as can be)    An then there is ether, as in (diethyl ether)  which is is not in the ether either,  but a liquid that is so volatile that it turns to a gas (or vapor).

So in essence,   it is clear that balloons should be given a wide berth.

German??????555555

At least now-a-days they don't blow them up by breath. In years gone by you had to cover your beer and wait to be sprayed with 'liquid' at 'bursting time'

Balloons are not environmentally friendly anyway, found in the guts of fish, birds and other animals. should be banned along with single use plastic bags and the overpackaging of goods

Yes I am ready for the backlash

Too lazy to blow up their own? Inflating them (often to the point where they burst) used to be the highlight of party time when I was a kid. Best use for our CO2 as well!

Sorry to break the bad news... yes Hydrogen in party balloons!

It seems that its main advantage is being much cheaper than helium which is why Thais use it.

Aside from that is its relatively low vapor pressure, which makes it easier to store and handle in compressed form. Actually, hydrogen is the only gas that is lighter than helium.

However, it has a very big disadvantage: It is highly flammable which doesn't seem to bother anyone?

IF ONE Blows up a balloon I always thought it was carbon dioxide from ones breath COULD BE WRONG as I am not a chemist ???!!!

I though they were going to ban single use plastics, which should include balloons.

Blame the Americans for that one  The Zeppelins were designed to use helium, not hydrogen, but at that time the only commercial source of helium was in the US and they wouldn't sell it to the Germans on the (understandable) grounds that it would give them the range to cross the Atlantic and bomb the east coast.

Old news in the rest of the modern world,  been banned as pollution hazard in my country for years.

I hate it when they pop all the ballows at the end of party's, you either choke on the carbon monoxide from where they blew them up with a motorbike exhaust or you get covered in spit from where they blew them up with their mouth
