I realize I would need to guard against the $greenback decreasing below the 800k.

This is teh thick end of $26.5k today so perhaps depost $30k to allow a !!% wedge for dollar devaluation during the seasoning season

I understand it must be onshore but uncertain if it needs to be a Thai bank as I already have an account with Citi be simplest.

The only purpose of the account would be to satisfy Immigration needs.

Thanks in advance,

I don't know if a dollar account satisfies Immigration but if you don't live in Bangkok, CitiBank does you no good unless you want to travel to Bangkok every year to obtain your annual statement

CitiBank is registered as a Thai bank and accounts there have been accepted at immigration. But some offices may not accept a foreign currency account for the extension application.

It requires a special letter from the bank for them. It will state the amount in the account in baht based upon the exchange rate on the date it is written.

As said it might be hard to get the letter and statements to meet some immigration offices requirement to have a letter and updated  bank book/statement no older than the day before since you would have to travel to Bangkok to get it.
