Crime Money Mule Gang Busted in a Bangkok Bank – Nearly 5 Million Baht Withdrawn in a Day
Picture courtesy of Matichon. In a midday operation, Thai police arrested three suspects inside a Bangkok bank on charges linked to an online investment scam that saw nearly five million baht withdrawn in a single day. The arrests were carried out by officers from the Central Investigation Bureau, led by Pol. Col. Phattharapol Patamawong and Pol. Col. Krit Worathat, in coordination with the cyber fraud investigation team of the Economic Crime Suppression Division and digital crime prevention officers from Siam Commercial Bank. The suspects, identified as Ms. Apatcha 23, Mr. Thanet 45 and Mr. Suriya 41, were apprehended in Bangkok and Samut Prakan on warrants issued by the Criminal Court. They face charges of public fraud and inputting false information into a computer system likely to cause public harm. The case came to light after Siam Commercial Bank flagged a series of unusually large cash withdrawals made from several of its Bangkok branches. Investigations revealed that the funds had been transferred from victims tricked via social media into investing in a fake online platform promising high returns. The suspects had reserved cash withdrawals in advance, prompting the bank to assign a surveillance team to monitor suspicious activity. Authorities say Ms. Apatcha served as the “money mule,” while Mr. Thanet supervised the cash withdrawals. Officers moved in once the pair attempted to withdraw approximately 4.9 million baht from one of the bank’s branches. Further investigation led police to Mr. Suriya, who was allegedly responsible for redistributing the withdrawn cash into a network of accounts used to launder the illicit funds. During questioning, Ms. Apatcha admitted to opening mule accounts and withdrawing money in exchange for 2,000 baht per transaction. Mr. Thanet and Mr. Suriya also confessed, stating they received around 5–5.5% of the total withdrawn amounts as commission. All three have been handed over to the Economic Crime Suppression Division for prosecution, while efforts are underway to track down other members of the criminal network. Crime Police Arrest Southern Drug Kingpin and Seize Assets
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Police have arrested a leading southern drug trafficking kingpin along with four members of his criminal network, seizing assets worth over 8 million baht in a sweeping operation across Nakhon Si Thammarat, Narathiwat and Chiang Mai provinces. The arrest is part of Operation “Take Down Mafia: Stopping the Secret Drug Route”, led by Police Lieutenant General Jiraphop Phuridej, Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), and senior officers from the Crime Suppression Division. Among those arrested is Mr. Thawatchai, 44, identified as the ring leader and a major financier of a large-scale methamphetamine distribution network operating in southern Thailand. He was apprehended at his residence along with his associates. Arrest warrants had been issued for three suspects: Thawatchai, Mr. Suhaimi (42) and Ms. Kasami (32), all charged with distributing Category 1 narcotics and participating in an organised criminal enterprise. Two additional suspects, Mr. Kornwirat (48) and Mr. Witawat (45), were arrested in the act and charged separately, including illegal possession of firearms. Authorities seized a significant cache of assets believed to be proceeds of the drug trade, including: • The house • Two cars and a pickup truck • Gold ornaments and bars (14 baht in weight) • Six branded handbags • Multiple Buddhist amulets • A 9mm handgun • A MacBook computer • Cash amounting to 61,300 baht The estimated total value of the seized assets is approximately 8,081,000 baht. Police revealed that the investigation stemmed from a sting operation in December 2024, in which undercover officers attempted to purchase 392,000 methamphetamine pills in Pattani province. During the attempted arrest, suspects opened fire on officers, injuring two policemen. One gang member was wounded and detained at the scene, while others escaped. Following this violent incident, investigators traced the network’s leadership back to Thawatchai, who was allegedly operating as the syndicate’s financier. The drugs were reportedly sourced from northern Thailand and transported via private delivery companies or hidden in trucks before being distributed to local dealers across the South. According to Police Major General Wittaya Sriprasertphap, Thawatchai had previously leveraged his illicit wealth to enter local politics, even attempting to run for village chief in Nakhon Si Thammarat. He also reportedly formed ties with local politicians and recruited gunmen to serve as his personal enforcers in a bid to consolidate power and protect his narcotics empire. The suspects were taken in for questioning. Thawatchai, Suhaimi, and Kasami denied all charges, while Kornwirat and Witawat admitted to possession of firearms. All have been remanded to the Crime Suppression Division for legal proceedings. Authorities continue to expand the investigation, warning that such criminal networks pose a severe threat to national security and public safety. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-07-29 -
