Stronger pound, ruble hold promise for Pattaya tourism

By Jetsada Homklin

Pattaya is hoping a recent resurgence in both the British pound and Russian ruble will boost tourism for the rest of high season.

Pattaya’s tourism industry has been keeping a close eye on exchange rates, hoping a recent resurgence in both the British pound and Russian ruble will boost tourism for the rest of high season.

The pound – down 4.9 percent against the baht this year and 23.6 percent from five years ago – showed its first signs of life since the United Kingdom’s Brexit vote with the landslide victory of Conservative Prime Minister Boris Johnson this month. Following the vote, the pound jumped from 38.7 baht to the sterling to 40.7. In the past week, however, it has given back 2.6%, sitting at 38.3 baht on Dec. 21.

Still, with Britain’s parliament finally passing Johnson’s Brexit deal, currency traders around the world expected the pound to strengthen now that uncertainty over the U.K.’s exit from the European Union has disappeared.

A bet on a stronger ruble isn’t as certain. Russians have returned to Thailand in strong numbers this year for the first time in five years, but the currency is still down 12 percent since 2014.

  • Stronger Pound? Where did they get that from? Every time Bungle Johnson opens his mouth it sinks lower.

  • A small spike in currency exchange isn't  going to bring back tourists it goes a lot deeper than that.

Article author doesn't know about the possible no trade deal problem causing GBP to temporarily drop.

A necessary threat to get a good deal as opposed to a turd trade deal to be offered by EU

Yes, outdated article.

Lovely...better stock up extra booze for the Ruskys and the rest....and hire some extra testosteroned bouncers for the girlie venues....

Most people book their holidays well in advance. Currency or not, it's not going to affect THIS high season.

We are never going to get a good exit deal from the EU. Been saying that since the referendum. Boris should leave now with a hard Brexit. Just another year wasted if not.

It got up to a dizzy 40 before Boris opened his trap and put no deal back on the table with a time limit ????

Brexit is going to do Nothing But untold damage to The UK especially with a No Deal. The Pound will Only Bomb Further Against the Baht and All Other Currencies...

Nicola Sturgeon doing her William Wallace bit seemed to start it downward.. then BJ took over. But the subject is Pattaya tourism not Brexit...( untold damage my Heinie....)

I cannot think of any country in Asia where you are forbidden to buy a beer during a certain time.   Waiting for a currency to go up just shows pathetic TAT really is.  Though the fortune teller thing was really close, this is worse.

What resurgence? The pound rose for about two days after the election, only to drop right back again. This press release is nonsense.

Typo !

The baht needs to drop. Simple.

Who holds what promise?

Who needs the Russians and the British? The rich Indians are going to save the tourist industry, remember? Oh sorry, that was last week. My mistake.

It's what the British people voted for in the referendum, sort of. We all expect a lower pound for a while until the dust clears. I personally was prepared to suffer a drop in living standards as long as the UK was clear of that awful socialist club. Britain is in Europe, it's never been and never will be European. Boris is merely doing his job by acting on the wishes of the people, like all politicians should and unfortunately the left don't.

Bht to High TIT

So we got the spin for the saviourous Chinese, then the wonderful high spending Indians, now we are back to the hopeful British and drunk russians

Interestingly, the Pound and the Ruble least affected by ChiCom hot money inflows at BoT.

Good luck to the Brits.

How many straws are there to clutch on to in this box ?

Never will be European ? ? Where do you think the UK is situated? from where do you think the British people evolved ? Where has our language come from ? In which substantial way do you think that a Brit differs from a Frenchman or German ?

The article should say "A recent fall in the value of the British Pound from 38.7 to 38.3 to the Baht will see yet another fall in the numbers of Brits coming to Thailand for their holidays and those that come will have less spending power"

Even the Press release shows the Pound dropping !! from 38.7 to 38.3.

Looks like they wrote the article a couple if days back, then events turned it into nonsense and too lazy to rewrite or ditch the article. Usual Thai news nonsense you see so often here. Full of mistakes, inaccuracies and disinformation as if the real life lies, obscurfactions and mask to paper over anything and everything that is remotely nit positive fir the place.

I am confused everywhere I read Brits are going to Spain or Tenerife or places closer to home.

Pattaya for the cost does not really offer much different.  Even if the pound were up I have a feeling Brits are still not going to want to blow their money flying to Pats.  The only ones that would do that are the old geezers with the big belies that have been doing it for years and it is their right of retirement to seek cheap booze and young ladies that will tell them that they look very hansum in a leo wifebeater that is too small and shorts with their beer gut hanging over the waist of the shorts.

Well the person you replied to already stated that Britain is part of geographical Europe but goes on to say that at the same time it is somewhat apart from the whole mainland of Europe mindset almost certainly a function of the physical disconnect of the land. I expect over time there will be more of a coming together of culture and mindset but hopefully we do not all run like sheep back into the EU undemocracy.

Ha, stronger GBP????? No I don't think so. Unless Thailand does something big about the strong Baht there ain't going to be any changes yet.
