Thai caption: Lose job - Hurt - No savings

A survey by the comparison site GoBear suggests that more than half of all Thais - 56% - don't have enough savings to survive losing their jobs for more than 6 months.

People were asked how long they could survive.

Six per cent were not sure.

Six said they didn't have enough to survive even a week.

Nine could last a month or less.

Eighteen had enough money for 1-3 months.

Seventeen had enough for 3 to six months.

In total 56% would be destitute within 6 months.

If you can't survive for 6 months, you need to start lowering your living expenses now and start saving more.

So many people live paycheck to paycheck in BKK, it is crazy

I am very surprised that as many as 44% think they could survive more than 6 months on no income

It's the same for us; if the amount of my retirement is suspended for 6 months; it may be very hard.
We live on about 80% of this small income (very small, comparable to that of many English people),; we have no credit, which is extremely rare in Thailand , but living 6 months in autarky without money, it may be possible because we live in the countryside, so we have a vegetable patch, chickens and ducks, but there replace the pickup with a pair of buffaloes and a cart ...:whistling:

They can find a new job in 6 hours,

so yes, they can survive...

I believe it's the same EVERYWHERE in reality. I'd bet most people in my home country would be hard pressed to come up with an AU$30k bank balance. Superannuation would likely cover it for most, but actual savings are very hard to accumulate.

That's because they live on credit...

Can you please post a link to the stats you based that statement on?

Thanks in advance.

I thought it was reported on TVF earlier this week that 63% of Thais had less than 500bht in bank savings.. Have could that last for 6 mths being unemployed??

i would be out of money and housing quicker then that if my pension was cancelled

they can always go back live with parents of work the corner

Not if you're the parents of lets say two children of schooling age, both working on a minimal Thai salary and you suddenly become unemployed.

All your salary goes on necessities not luxuries, you don't have a spare satang at the end of the month to start saving. You can't lower what's already at rock bottom.

Pay check to pay check is the only way a fair percentage live.

You my friend are living in a dream world!

No worries, pawn your iphones, cars designer clothes.

You cannot  automatically access superannuation funds when unemployed, strict criteria exists for accessing super prior to age 55

Designer clothes from local market??

Cars, under finance

Iphones worth nothing secondhand

There was study done in UK, USA and Australia a few years ago, and it revealed 70% (I think was the figure) were less than 3 pay checks away from homelessness.

I read where Mazda are moving some of their manufacturing back to japan.Baht to high was the excuse.

Out in the villages the people can survive...pretty much live off the land of they have to.

tons of cheap beer and cigs flying out the doors of the 7/11's

maybe an educational campaign about how those items consumed on a daily basis make you stupid

First I don't believe this as 6 months is a very long time with no money coming in. There seems to be lots of millionaires on here except from the real world or living in a fantasy world. Living more than a few months with zero income and having to pay car loans, mortgages, credit card, school fees and feeding ones family is wishful thinking for most. Most thais struggle day to day in rural areas and people starve when it rains for a week or so therfore unable to work as most paid day to day. This is where the loan sharks make their killing.

Google..try it. First result.  https://www.threethriftyguys.com/2014/01/how-long-could-you-live-without-a-paycheck/

Back in 2012 Huffington Post reported that two thirds of American households are living paycheck-to-paycheck. Quoting the results of a survey from the American Payroll Association, they reported that 68% of households would find it “somewhat difficult or very difficult if their paychecks were delayed for a week”.

Europe: Compared to US citizens, Europeans are apparently in worse shape.
