Advanced Info Service (AIS) will stop handing out single-use plastic bags at AIS shops and Serenade Club nationwide from January 1, 2020, according to its announcement on Monday (December 30).

If a customer asked for a plastic bag, he/she will be given a biodegradable plastic bag which will decompose within 180 days after being buried underground.

The move reflects a collective drive of the public and private sectors to reduce the use of single-use plastic items in Thailand.

Recently, Thai Retailers Association decided to introduce a campaign titled “Every Day Say No to Plastic Bags”, under which all its 75 members will stop providing such bags at 24,500 distribution channels, starting from January 1.

In October, AIS launched its “Mission Green 2020” environment protection campaign to encourage people to drop off their electronic waste at AIS shops or its participating partners.

The campaign aims to cut one million units of carbon dioxide equivalent and eliminate at least 100,000 pieces of electronic waste by 2020.

Very commendable but will it be fully implemented? Last night on my way home from Tourist Police duties in Issan, I stopped to purchase a sandwich and lemon tea at a busy 7-11 shop in a PTT station at 02:30 hours today (1st January). Still plenty of single use plastic bags and straws being used and available at all the check-outs!!

yea, bio-degradable is a good idea. Good.

Bill, I take it your sandwich was wrapped in plastic and your lemon tea came in a plastic bottle? Perhaps the sandwich should have been wrapped in (foil, paper, nothing)? Your lemon tea could have come in a plastic bag instead of a plastic bottle, or would a paper bag with a paper straw would work better?
