Somsak Thepsuthin

Minister of Justice Somsak Thepsuthin said a task force on sex offenders would be set up, comprising personnel from the Department of Probation (DOP), Department of Corrections (DOC), and Department of Special Investigation (DSI).

Also, the Royal Thai Police will be asked to collect data and verify the whereabouts of all sex offenders, such as whether the offender is wanted, imprisoned, or close to being released, he said, adding “by doing so, people can be warned of the threats".

DOP, DOC, and DSI will jointly monitoring the offender's case and activities before a law is drawn up and enforced. “This operation will start early next year, ” Somsak said.

Regarding the problem of overcrowding in state prisons, the minister said bunk beds would be introduced instead of building new facilities.

“Currently, there were 134 prisons nationwide, sufficient for the number of prisoners being held at a time ” he said. “The bunk beds, when installed, can accommodate up to 100,000 prisoners at a cost of Bt200 million".

Drug users, he said, should instead be detained in hospitals but drug dealers and producers should be punished severely”.

Lastly, the minister said foods supplied to prisons should meet acceptable standards.

Standards? Regular restaurants don't have standards so why should prisons expect to have acceptable food standards?

HUH? They don't already know if these folks are in prison and soon to be release? Are you bleeping kidding me? They seem to be tracking the farang very well but are clueless as to where all the sex offenders are? My head is going to explode!!! I have so many things I want to say right now but...….

I hope they introduce a Sex Offenders Register like the UK, but I have my doubts whether the necessary administration and monitoring will take place.

Drugs are a world wide problem. probably will get worse before it gets better.

Because you have a choice weather to eat in a resturant, no choice but to eat whatever slops they might serve in a prison...

HUH? We're talking about murderers, child molesters, rapists, etc. Even Slop is too good for them.

'Task Force' means a huge budget for a group of relatives or friends who will pontificate for several months whilst eating, drinking and nicking the budget and achieve next to nothing !

Schools are a great place to start looking for bad people  hiding.

Followed by villages in the boonies.

I seem to recall a liking for white shades of girls from Chang Mai / Rai from certain  elements ....

The list goes on

More likely we’re talking about low-level drug offenders who didn’t have the cash to buy their way out of an arrest.

'Task Force' is just a different name for a committee, and you know how Thais love their committees (not down to me guv'nor, it was the committee's decision).

More pantomimes...

So are sex offences!

Looks like a nice suit the guy is wearing, he should have a tie on though.

Then he'd be accused of copying from foreigners.

Nonononono... not on, not on at all.

I wonder if it is the same certain elements that frequent parts of Yorkshire, and some English cities.

Amusing that this was in the right hand column directly under "Why are so many foreigners leaving Thailand?'

To relieve Husker's confusion, My "bullet" reference was to the kid who was detained , and is in jail because they claim they found a bullet in his luggage, a scam often perpetuated in the Philippines but now seems to have made its way to Thailand.

For a second there, I thought this may be a new TAT task force to attract more of 'em.

As well as a fair few innocents plus minor drug users & political activists, or do you think the Thai justice system is perfect?

If you ask some from Isan, they will tell you that the search for sex offenders could start at the police station.
