Starbucks Coffee (Thailand) today (January 2) that it will provide paper straws to customers at all stores nationwide ‪starting January 6‬, in a move to reduce usage of single-use plastic items towards Starbucks Coffee's global target of eliminating plastic straws from all its stores within 2020.

“Preserving the environment is everyone’s responsibility. Therefore, Starbucks is proud to announce that we now provide an alternative to plastic straws to our customers in Thailand. To kick off the year of sustainability, we invite everyone to choose environment-friendly straws and use personal cups in order to reduce single-use plastics, and we’re happy to offer a Bt20 discounts every Wednesdays ‪through February 19, 2020‬ to customers who bring their own cups to purchase our beverages at all Starbucks stores nationwide,” said  Nednapa Srisamai, Managing Director of Starbucks (Coffee) Thailand.

The new paper straws are biodegradable and made from responsibly-sourced paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), a Germany-based, non-profit organisation that promotes responsible management of the world's forests.

The straws are available in both standard and large sizes for beverages with jellies and various toppings, to ensure that customers enjoy the same coffee-drinking experience as before while at the same time, help Starbucks Thailand eliminate the more than 39 million plastic straws handed out each year.

Additionally, Starbucks has suggested three simple everyday ways to go green while enjoying quality Starbucks coffees and preserving the environment:

1. Use personal cups – Not only does this help reduce single-use plastics, it also saves you money because Starbucks offers 20-baht discounts to customers bringing their own cups to purchase our beverages every Wednesday ‪from today until February 19, 2020‬. On other days, a 10-baht discount is offered.

2. Choose paper straws – Opt for biodegradable paper straws or reusable straws that come in various colors.

3. Reduce plastic utensils – If you intend to enjoy your favorite desserts from Starbucks at home, at the office, or at schools where cutlery is available, please tell our baristas that you don’t need our takeaway utensils. Or simply dine in and enjoy our stores’ vibe and the aroma of freshly brewed coffees.

Every little step is a good step and many little steps together are some big steps.

Whatever "ballcocks" mean. Google Translate found only something technical. I guess it´s a slang word what all non-native speakers don´t understand - and in this forum are many of them.

I gotta  much  better plan..... you  just dont need any straws at all.........i dont think I can say  <deleted> so  ballcocks  will suffice.

You actually don’t. In many Starbucks around the world they don’t use straws at all and have a new lid that makes it not necessary to have one. Not sure why Thailand is bypassing that since it’s something many Starbucks already use.

Its been widely reported that the paper straws melt and get soggy in short order.......Paper straws as a replacement for plastic straws is 100% nonsense...

Plastic straws are here to stay........plastic yesterday   plastic today  plastic straws forever .....

How do they handle the issue of drink sizing/pricing when the customer is bringing their own cup/container that may or may not fit into their standard Tall / Venti, etc. sizes?

Its kind of funny that Starbucks still uses PLASTIC in every last one of their coffee cups....It seems these cups are not a problem for the environment....lol

When I've bought hot drinks from them, I'm pretty sure they've come in a heavy paper type cup, with a plastic snap on lid.

The plastic is layered in between the paper in Starbucks cups...

I like it. For the first time in Thailand I finally see someone 100% eliminating a form of plastic, not floundering in reduction / switching to other kinds of plastics which solves nothing. Starbucks going from a billion plastic straws to 0 this year is truly excellent.

Can’t you just use one of your 7/11 collection of straws? You know the ones you get when you buy a large milk or a beer.

Starbucks hi-so clientele.

Their paper straws pictured in the article suspended in their thick plastic cups.  When do we get rid of those? ????

Unbelievable - do they honestly think this will happen on a regular basis and will Starbuck's provide a washing area where customers can clean their cups after use!! Personally, I never drink their coffee as it is too expensive!

Paper loves water and it soaks up to pulp. So what is in the straw that makes it not to pulp?

Plastic?

Found a bamboo straw a month ago. If you have a missing lower jaw or some other impairment requiring the use of such a device, it's a good choice as it won't stick to your lip like the superglue-like paper straws do. Or, you could drink your coffee like a man, from the cup.

Starbucks very rarely has actual coffee prepared, as 90% of its customers here are getting one of their milkshakes (they call it something else).  Which isn't to bad as I can wait the 4 minutes and have a fresh batch brewed just for me!

Sure 'bucks is a bit spendy but it makes a nice place to hang out, comfie chairs and working tables, nice and cool, if an out of the way one it is calm and a good place to focus.  I actually wrote a majority of my PhD at a couple 'bucks around my house over a period of a year and a half.  They were always accommodating and happy to see me, got to know my name and all.  Worth the extra 20%.
