Finn arrested over alleged airport bomb threat

A 63-year-old Finnish expatriate was arrested for allegedly phoning in a bomb threat to Suvarnabhumi Airport on Wednesday (January 1), police reported on Friday.

 

Pol Lt General Amphol Buarabporn, commander of Provincial Police Region 1, said his division and Immigration Police had made the arrest after tracing the call to a mobile phone belonging to a foreigner.

 

“We then waited for the suspect to arrive at a check-in counter at Suvarnabhumi and arrested him before he could depart for Finland.”

 

Amphol described the man, who has not been named, as repetitive and confusing in his preliminary interrogation and likened his manner to that of a psychiatric patient.

 

“He claimed that, on entering Thailand via Suvarnabhumi, he noticed the airport’s security system was faulty and vulnerable to a terrorist attack, so he made the call to warn the authorities.

 

“But the phone call suggests otherwise, pointing to a threat and invoking panic, which is in violation of the Thailand Airport Act and punishable with five-15 years in jail or a fine of Bt200,000-Bt600,000 or both.”

 

Ampol said police were considering having the suspect’s mental health evaluated.

 

Immigration Police chief Lt-General Sompong Chingduang said it has been determined the suspect has entered and left the Kingdom nine times.

 

He declined to reveal further details pending further investigation.

Don't see the connection, the bullet in the bag thing was a possible scam, and a bad one at that as the whole issue is well covered on the Net. This is a guy with mental issues.

I remember a looooong time ago a friend suggested calling the airport with a bomb warning to delay everything if someone was late to his flight. And 30 years ago that might have worked. But today the situation is slightly different...

I hope they deport him and never let him in again.

and this is one of the reasons they pushed for SIM registration..

He should be fined the maximum and deported. If he is unable to pay the fine then the Finnish government should pick up the tab. The Finnish government should be held responsible for issuing this nutcase a passport.  This idea that mentally unfit people have the right to travel is BS.

Are you seriously suggesting a psych exam for everyone getting/renewing their passport? You should be careful what you wish for.

If that is truly the criteria for a mental health evaluaion, maybe they should take a look at the silly little general PM as well!

For people who are claiming mental disability pension or have a long history of documented mental problems, the answer is yes. This is 62 year old mental nutter who has to go back home on a regular basis (most probably to get his metal disability pension and drugs). Based on this nutter's explanation for calling in the bomb threat and the Thai immigration's mental assessment of him, there should be little doubt that this individual is unfit to travel.

Yes. Let me repeat this guy is a piece of sh*t. Let's say your flight was delayed because of his nonsense and you had to stay an extra night in Bangkok resulting in a missed appointment back home that was important to you.   I think you would have similar opinion to mine. People who are considered mentally ill and receive a disability cheque should not be able to travel.

Forget about passports, they should implement one for everyone wishing to join TV.  The place would be awfully quiet suddenly.

What if he did actually just call the airport about a security flaw he had spotted? And now the officials realised he was right, don't want to lose face over the flaw and turned it against him. Just a theory ???? but would be very Thai-like. 

On a serious note, with the nr. of Finnish nutcases I see here I wouldn't be suprised if it was a mental problem case either. 

I've got a friend who managed to hack into a specific govt. database sometime ago, revealing all foreigners personal information. Being an expert in IT-security, he would have loved to inform the authorities and help them fix the issue, but was too scared they'll just turn it against him. This has happened in Europe too.

I would suggest that's the first thing you should be doing considering it was stated that he was repetitive and confusing in his preliminary interrogation and likened his manner to that of a psychiatric patient.

Yes fine him the max then deport him home with a tag to finnish police that he need psychiatric evaluation and should be considered as dangerous

lock him up, followed by permanent  black list.  simple!
