Thongplew Kongjun

Royal Irrigation Department director-general Thongplew Kongjun ordered Regional Irrigation Office 11 on Monday (December 6) to prepare a water management plan for Lat Pho canal, aiming to use the canal water to control the salinity level of the Chao Phraya River.

“This water management operation is one of the measures to cope with saltwater intrusion in the Chao Phraya River, which affects tap water production and agricultural activity,” he said.

The operation will also support water release from Chao Phraya Dam and irrigation in the Mae Klong River on January 8 and 9. These operations aim to dilute the river’s salinity.

Thongplew said that when saltwater is low, the floodgates will be opened to push the Chao Phraya water out. The gates will be closed when saltwater rises to prevent its intrusion.

His department is also collaborating with the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority to suspend the pumping of water from Samlae Raw Water Pumping Station in Pathum Thani province when the sea rises.

High tides this week threaten tap water quality in Bangkok and suburbs

Tides are forecast to peak between January 8th and 15th, which may increase the salinity of tap water in Bangkok and its suburbs, according to Mr. Somkiat Prajamwong, secretary-general of the National Water Resources Office (NWRO) on Monday, following a meeting to address the problem of seawater intrusion into the Chao Phraya River.

He said that water from the Bhumibol reservoir, in the northern province of Tak, and the Sirikit reservoir in Uttradit, will be fed into the Chao Phraya River through a network of smaller waterways and canals, such as the Mae Klong and Tha Chine rivers, Khlong Jorakhae Samphan and Khlong Phraya Banlue, to resist the seawater intrusion.

Meanwhile, Mr. Somsak Passananont, director of the Water Resources and Environment at the Metropolitan Waterworks Department, said today that production of tap water has not been affected by high tides, as the salinity of the water at Samlae pumping station in Pathum Thani province was recently measured at 0.3 grams/litre, still below the 0.50 gram/litre benchmark level.

I love all these embellished names to designate some uneducated people who were nominated at these embellished posts.

These figures are wrong, the MWA max recomended salinity is 0.25g/l not 0.50mg/l. This was reaffirmed in a study during a similar high salinity occurance on 16th February 2014. In 1982 the King's water management plan carried out by JICA recommended a tidal barrage and a new dam on the Yom river, neither have been built so we have to live with the consequences. I have been pushing  them to complete the works constantly since the '80s. A colleague went to the Yom River basin some years ago to carry out the EIA for the dam but nearly got shot by the local farmers concerned about losing their land. However, nearly every year since then, the Yom River has dried up for months at a time, as it is now.

They can flush, or try to flush, out the water, but salt gets into everything. They also need to clean up the rocks, and the shorelines. Salt is just one of those things that once its in is hard to get out...

I really think they should try harder to make the gravitational pull of the moon less hard on the Thai high tides. If only all the Palang Pracharath Party members and the 250 junta appointed free seat given senators while led by Big P got down and prayed to the moon spirit, then all would be fine and dandy. They could have little P get out one of his watches and time everything to the split second to make it work.
