Thais need to crackdown on cuddly toy gambling  - the kids are at risk from this menace!

A group concerned that children are being encouraged to gamble by playing the crane games at stores held a meeting at a hotel in Bangkok to outline their case.

And they presented evidence that the cabinets are still being brazenly operated nationwide despite a crackdown in the middle of last year.

The case relates to the games that cost a few baht where the player tries to grab a cuddly toy or some other prize with a crane.

Critics including the group concerned about children say it is nothing short of gambling. Parents are pestered by their children to feed their addiction, they claim.

Other people say it is just a bit of fun and parents should learn to say no to their children.

Group rep Natthapong Sampaokaew said that there was a crackdown in June of last year but now the situation is spiralling out of control.

His group conducted a survey in 92 stores in 10 provinces. A total of 75 had the games and there were 1,300 of the cabinets.

The group wants something done about this menace.

Thaivias notes that the authorities in Chiang Mai decided last year that the games constituted gambling and a few were shut down and a couple of arrests were made.

It now seems that a blind eye is one again being shown.

I found so many of these machines at Pantip Plaza in CNX while trying to find where my computer repair guy had moved to.

The crane machines has a randomized factor in how much force the claw will apply. Most of the time you will not be able to win anything even if you perform perfectly, because the claw will not apply enough force.

If this is the case, they are a bit of a scam.

BTW, it seems that the Central Group is maintaining the ban.

The claw is really weakly sprung. Anyway, I have not seen kids playing these machines. I only see adults playing and wasting their money.

They win a prize for demonstrating hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity in machine operation.

It's no more gambling than winning a prize for hitting a golf ball accurately.

Or skillfully operating a racing drone:

Or surviving a days driving on Thai roads, where you gamble with your life.

I wonder what a Thai would think if they went to an exhibition with all the carny games of chance.

There is actually nothing wrong with these games as they are more a chance for a guy to impress his gf or date that he could win her something just like going to the fair.

How many of young guys spent a fortune trying to knock down enough targets to get the big bear. LOL in hopes that we got lucky.

It is just like anything else either steer your kids away from them or just say know.

MBK has a lot fo them and I only see teens playing them

So many problems in Thailand and they focus on a children's game of grabbing cuddly toys.

Not forgetting the superpower president who likes grabbing pussy

CM I saw a guy who resembles a Korean servicing them at Panthip. Yes, not like the old days where you could actually pull something out, but nowadays the claw goes sort of limp like an old fellers tool does with age. Outcome needed is the claw needs to be strengthened for the touch and grab and the old fellas tool needs a supplement to help Mr Happy stand at attention.

There is no skill involved even if you pick up every time it is made so that the item falls before getting to the drop chute. This is just a scam like slot machines designed to enrich the owner with minimum loss.

Or maybe for once common sense prevails... anyone who sees this as a menace to childrens needs to focus on more pressing issues like the death rate of kids on the roads.

Responsibility and Thai people should never be used in the same article, and certainly never in the same sentence.

Very true. My post was in reply to one stating that gambling in Calif was illegal.
