Korn quitting Democrat Party after 15 years

Former finance minister Korn Chatikavanij is resigning from the Democrat Party on Wednesday (January 15).

Korn made the announcement on Tuesday (January 14) evening, when members of Parliament and former MPs of the Democrat Party organised a New Year’s party for its former leader and ex-PM Abhisit Vejjajiva.

More than 50 stalwarts, including party-list MP Korn, Agriculture Minister and party secretary-general Chalermchai Sri-On, Deputy Public Health Minister and party deputy leader Sathit Pitudecha, and another deputy leader, Ongart Klampaiboon, attended the event.

Notable by his absence at the party was current Democrat leader Jurin Laksanawisit, as well as MPs considered close to him.

Korn got on the stage and sang “Rak Ther Sameu” (I’ll always love you), a hit song from 1990s in tears. He was joined by others, who were also in tears. When the song ended, Abhisit gave him a hug.

Korn said the reason for his resignation was he thought he had already fulfilled his duty as an MP after the 2020 Budget Act had been approved by Parliament. Korn joined the Democrat Party in 2005 and served for 15 consecutive years.

Before the event concluded, Abhisit gave a speech encouraging all MPs to maintain the political ideology of the party and commit to solving the country’s problems.

He vowed to assist all party members in any way he could, provided they did not go against his beliefs and ideology. “Our bonds are stronger than any crises,” he said. “I wish all of you a good year, good health and good commitment to progress forward together.”

love him or hate him he was their leader for many years so deserves some respect, how pathetic for the current leader  and his brown nosing sycophants to not attend, shows the party is no longer relevant, time for these dinosaurs to give politics away.

You don't know what you're talking about, Korn was never the leader of The Democrats. He has no support base in the party hence his massive defeat in the leadership contest. But like Warong, he craves the limelight. If he stands for Bangkok governor he'll have no chance against Chadchart.

Apparently he'll join Palang Pracharat, the junta's party. That sums him up.

Though he is a man of intelligence, and is well educated, and had alot of experience (unlike most of the current ministers) it is a shame that when he became finance minister for Abhisit, they were not able to accomplish much, and the entire administration seemed quite lame. Not much of a show for the party. Of course, by comparison, the current administration makes them look like genius minds. But, that is not saying much.

By your standards there are no national parties in LOS.

The Democrats are all done now. Abhisit has been the poison draft, along with his mates Suthep and Leekpai.

At least Korn has some dignity and is walking. He knows what the future holds for them and none of it is good.

You say that almost whimsically, like lying to people is not usual Thai behaviour. I wish it were so, but all parties are the same because all parties are made up of Thais, and the relationship between Thais and the truth is a bit tenuous on a good day.

Seems a like you're saying that Thais are the only politicians lying to their constituents. You wouldn't have to look very far to see that isn't so. One leader I won't name wouldn't recognize the truth if it bit him on the a-s.

And not only in Thailand.

Hrmmm.

Didn't say that, didn't mean that. In any event, because a dishonest population is not uniquely dishonest is hardly a point in it's favour. Politicians are dishonest the world over yet I have not seen the same blatant nature to the lies I have heard in Thailand; it's one of the benefits of keeping the Thai people stupid and uneducated I suppose.

I still maintain that Thailand is a sinking ship, it's been re-arranging the deckchairs for years  but it's luck is running out as has been evidenced by events over the past 5 years, and as will be further evidenced by events this year. It's all done.
