Govt gives special raise to coup makers

(BangkokPost.com) - The cabinet agreed Tuesday to raise salary of coup makers by 30 per cent, which doubles up the usual raise due to their dedication to work.

The special raise, to be given to 423 soldiers involved in Sep 19 coup that ousted Thaksin Shinawatra, is decided following the proposal by The Secretariat of the Council for National Security. The office said the soldiers should be given higher raise because they have worked over time plus no vacation.

Under normal circumstances, soldiers get a raise of 15 per cent.

Nattawut Sutthiyothin, deputy government spokesman, said the office proposed this issue since March and assured that the issue went through normal procedure and careful consideration before the government has reached the decision.

The pay raise is expected to put about 120 soldiers onto higher posts.
