BANGKOK (NNT) - The latest economic ministers meeting chaired by Prime Minister/Defense Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has issued two measures to support the tourist industry and cope with the effects of coronavirus infections from the beginning of this month.

Tourism Authority of Thailand Governor Yutthasak Supasorn, said today the urgent measure which is being implemented from February to April calls for the creation of understanding with members of the public and tourists that the Thai people are a top priority, while alerts and information are being provided to tourists, with an upgraded One Stop Service for them as well as assistance for tour business operators, and a search for alternative tourist markets.

The long-term measure which will be implemented from May calls for the setting up of an original Ease of Traveling Committee to make preparations for tourists after the situation has returned to normal.

Kobsak Pootrakul, a deputy secretary general to the prime minister, said assistance for tour business operators will initially be provided by the Ministry of Finance with low-interest loans and extended repayments while local administrative organizations will organize seminars in the provinces to stimulate domestic tourism and introduce a tax cut for airline fuel.

BLAH BLAH BLAH. Meaningless waffle, and these people are paid for these meetings...

Reads like a lot of doublespeak with no actual meaning. If this is the best they can come up with then there is a need for some new economic ministers who can actually provide positive & creative measures

There are none. It’s a virus outbreak affecting 1 segment of their tourism.

anyone with half a brain would do what smart ones did and cancel all flights to assure the locals and the rest of the tourists that it’s safe. This idiots are worried sick chinese will not come

Hard to create a medical hub without the sick. ????

So true they care about the people so much they are one of the few SE Asian countries still allowing and wooing the Chinese in with bring you fat wallet arms. Funny, North Korea was one of the first to close their borders to them. Oh no, but Thailand no, and Hun Sen over in Little china Cambodia same.

Who in the heck is going to travel to a virus war zone with Thailand about to explode. Philippines just had their first Chinese Wuhan traveler death, and his G-Griend travelling with him is positive. Now they closed direct travel going there.

Agreee with your last sentence. The longer Thailand continues to welcome Chinese tourists the more likely it is that tourists and potential tourists from other countries start to look elsewhere.

It's probably happening already, with Thailand being the country with the most coronavirus cases outside of China.

Lose one market or risk losing many markets? And as for the suggestion of looking for alternative tourist markets, I'd suggest putting that plan on ice until the situation is under control.

High Season was going to be over by now even if there was no virus.  Accept the basic reality, and do great things to stop the virus.

After that's done, then hire some real tourism promoters to aggressively start a new campaign.  Since no Thais have such experience, they'll have to be westerners.

Think that would actually happen?

Well, perhaps not the only ones, but certainly the most important ones. It's a common enough delusion, but I will grant it's irritating.

All the verbal diarrhea government officials spout now is all about corona virus, the AQI / SMOG is just as bad a killer to tourism and peoples health, simple to fix if only they could be arsed... as always in Thailand it's all about the brown envelopes to turn a blind eye... the thicker the better... ????????

Someone once said, 'There's no such thing as a free lunch.'  Not true in Thailand; there's so many committees and meetings that the self-important bigwigs are munching their way through Thailand's Gross National Product.  (Look at Prawit!)

Nothing concrete is ever decided' it is mere hot air blather.  Thailand's contribution to Global Warming along with the slash and burn Agricultural permissions.
