The Finance Ministry is planning to propose to the Cabinet on Tuesday measures to promote domestic tourism to help business operators affected by the outbreak of the new coronavirus, which has significantly reduced the number of Chinese tourists since the beginning of 2020, Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak said today (February 3).

“One measure will be the fourth phase of the ‘Eat, Shop, Spend’ campaign to boost domestic travel and spending among Thais to help local entrepreneurs,” he said. “We will also explore measures to restore the confidence of foreign tourists once the situation goes back to normal.”

Somkid will also meet the finance minister and the Budget Bureau director on Tuesday to discuss alternative sources of funds for the government’s key campaigns while the 2020 budget disbursement is still on hold.

The deputy PM said that in the past few weeks, the Finance Ministry has issued several measures to boost domestic investment, such as offering tax deductions 2.5 times the investment capital, free tariffs on import of machinery, and urging banks to grant more loans to business operators who wish to upgrade their facilities.

“The appreciation of the baht has created a good opportunity for Thai manufacturers to import equipment from overseas to boost their production capacity,” he added.

“Furthermore, I have ordered the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives to explore the possibility of establishing a subsidiary to rent agricultural machines and equipment to community enterprises and farmers on a monthly or yearly basis. This measure should help in increasing the production capacity at the grass-roots level and expand business opportunities for other industries, such as tourism, services and processing of agricultural produce into OTOPs,” Somkid said.

Thais never learn anything, China ignored the first signs of this virus until it became a serious issue... then began city lock-downs.

Thailand is in the same early stages  and they want to promote "domestic tourism" ???

Defies all logic!

Sense would tell Thais to stay locally, keep contact with strangers to a minimum, and take healthy precautions at all times for at least the next month to see if this diminishes!

In control they preach... Jeez.

That is what I said to my other half and at least up in the sticks where we are, with minimal contact with the outside as in major tourist hubs, we are better off where we are until this unfolds.

A  post doing the rounds with actual footage inside the hospital, from a female Chinese doctor in Wuhan with her face covered, said the Chinese government is flat out lying about the scale of the epidemic and she further said those infected were in their hundreds of thousands in China alone.

Next, the obsession and it is total obsession with Thais and money grabbing, they are pushing and promoting domestic tourism whilst domestic debt skyrockets, household debt at record levels and wages stagnant?

One way to guarantee this affects and spreads to the whole country is for locals to go visit tourist hot-spots frequented by travelers from China and others. Are these Morons from the Finance ministry and main government ever in touch with the common people in any shape or form?

Amazing Thailand indeed.

I'm waiting for the announcement that Immigration is temporarily suspending its policy of restricting visa on arrival and tourist visas. And that tourists can now enter and reenter as many times as they want during the year so that the arrival numbers can reach the target and foreigners can stay longer and spend more.

Immigration will also be tasked with being welcoming to farangs and being more intelligent, and operating in the manner of a modern customer-focused government department.

again we see that all the govt care about here is money, they show no common sense at all and how badly educated they are by these badly thought out ideas, they really need well educated and smart thinking people running the country not just the generals mates and sycophants sucking up to him

Meh.

The fallout from increased medical bills/expenditures will likely result in some sort of regulation/surcharge impacting foreigners.

"The Tourism Authority of Thailand is an organization of Thailand under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Its mandate is to promote Thailand's tourism industry." - https://www.tourismthailand.org/

The FM has no business in creating the same role as TAT's mission.

Doing so will blur governmental lines of authority and operations, create more government bureaucracy and expense.

TV doesn't appear to have published the answer to your question but Thailand's English language printed newspaper did state that Songkran will be promoted nationwide in order to attract more Thai and foreign tourists and boost tourism receipts. (not allowed to link)

And that really does show the brain power of those in charge here. In the midst of coronavirus they seem to have forgotten that much of Thailand will be suffering drought conditions and that large crowds throwing water at each other isn't exactly conducive to a healthy environment!
