Breaking with Republicans, Romney votes 'guilty' in Trump impeachment trial

Mitt Romney gives us a faint glimmer of hope that the nation can somehow someday emerge from this horrific darkness of an authoritarian president now completely above the law due to a complicit senate.

Complete and utter rubbish!

Your overly dramatic bias has long-since clouded your ability to post constructive opinions of the President of the United States.  Not good.

Romney is still smarting from getting his butt kicked when he ran for President...if John McCain were still alive...he would have voted to impeach for the same reason...sour grapes...they both strongly dislike the President and have voted accordingly...

Amen.  Rumor has it that Utah is considering a recall for their lame junior Senator.

One Republican senator worthy of being a senator.  Pity there's only one.

Source please. I never heard of such a thing.

Romney is a dead man walking. Karma is coming for this traitorous, unprincipled weak man.

My bad - it was 5 Dem Reps that voted for impeachment against Clinton - which made it a bi-partisan impeachment, whereas no GOP Rep voted yes fopr impeachment against Trump.

That shows how bad Romney's action was - especially given the fact that Clinton's offences were proven with evidence and not denied.

No!

Don't worry, it's more likely the Pope would become a Lutheran.  ????

Of course it is Boon Mee, you know these things, and you know Romney is up for election in November.... except he isn’t.

Putting aside ill health or an act of stochastic terrorism, Romney will be around for at least the next five years.

Long enough for his vote to be fully appreciated.

Recalling a Senator is not a thing.

Back to Civics class you go.

To be fair, no Democratic Congressmen or Democratic Senators were material participants in Clinton’s misbehavior.

The same cannot be said for Republican Congressmen and Republican Senators wrt Trumps crimes.

"High crimes and misdemeanors". There should at least be some realistic facsimile of a crime. Asking that a crook who bragged about extorting a country to protect his kid from legal jeopardy is pretty far being a crime. It's an obligation. But don't worry. I have a feeling the Biden affairs in Ukraine will have the light of day shined on them. And that's a good thing, yes?

Who said trump cannot have biden investigated?

can you share the evidence that biden is a crook.

Thank you so much Mr Romney

The only one who has the fortitude  to denounce the abuses of Mr. President ????

Yes.

He's the only one republican senator or congressman that is going to end up being on the right side of history.

Yes he's taking the pain now.

According to Roger Stone, Trump had no intention of giving Mitt the SoS job. He just want to see Mitt squirm. As Roger allude “to toy with him”. What kind of animal is Trump with this kind of cruel deed and he lied about Mitt on his knees begging. Really a disgusting and detestable character and worse hold the highest office in the land.

Romney should have known but he let his blind ambition walk over any principal. I'd have respected him more if he has said "no way I can work with Trump" but he didn't. It's what he IS.

Romney will be remembered for his courage, long after Trump is gone.  He's being recognized now...

[Romney did something that so many of his Republican colleagues have repeatedly shown that they cannot do — put country and conscience over party loyalty and personal ambition.]

[Trump’s acquittal — even in the face of massive evidence of wrongdoing — was the logical conclusion of four years of GOP cowardice and political nihilism.]

[It’s a test that Republican politicians — and Republican voters — have consistently and spectacularly failed. Every outrage has been excused; every corrupt or classless act explained away — even if in private Republicans understand all too well the danger that Trump represents.]

Nobody will even remember this after they get their next pay check.

Speaking of which, consider Senator Susan Collins. Always teasing fairness and falling away from the 45 cult of personality / fear retribution factor. Always caving. Such cynical transparent game playing is arguably worse than the hard core followers.

A great contrast to Romney, the real deal.

The Utah GOP and senior Senator from Utah, Mike Lee, formally denounced Romney.

He will go down as the only member of the Republican party to be fooled by Adam Schiff, Jerry Nadler and Nancy Pelosi.  Quite the distinction.

The recall bill being crafted at the state level in Utah has picked up steam since Romney's vote.

There are only about a dozen and a half states that have recall votes in place to recall US Senators.  Utah would add its name if the bill passes.

That's interesting.

I seriously doubt that he will actually be recalled.

You say he was fooled by the house managers.

I say he is the only one republican senator or congressman that can look himself in the mirror without barfing.

I am pretty sure they can all look in the mirror without such a reaction. You really do not know what is happening in the USA now. This is nothing short of hyperbolic tripe. Those of us not completely isolated outside of the USA know better.

Another slimy character with no backbone. Tireless advocate for founding constitutional principles, urged Trump to quit in 2016 and sharply criticized him is now co-chairman of Trump’s re-election. GOP is just full of these unprincipled gutless representatives and only one has the fortitude to stand up to Trump.

Exactly. Also if they had had the nerve to group together and dump 45 which he so richly deserves, they would have gotten a President Pence, arguably more strictly purist right wing than 45. This has become an extremely toxic situation. We've seen this in history and throughout other current nations with authoritarian regimes like Turkey now that have given up on democracy and caved to a cult of personality. Opposing 45 is not so much about opposing his policy objectives but more about opposing the USA turning into a dictatorship with a presidency that is the same as a total monarch. Lots of countries with no democracy still have elections. Elections corrupted by their dear leaders.

It's been hilarious to watch the Democrat propaganda media fawn all over Mitt Romney for his bravery.

The media outed themselves again.  I never saw that fawning when Democrat Jeff Van Drew left the Democrat party over the unfair House impeachment process.

In 2012 the left viewed Romney as a racist misogynist. Now he's the most noble man ever.

Oh jeeeezusssss...he did, what was right in this case!

That is ALL, people aplaude him for!

THIS time!

People are allowed to have an opinion on one thing and another opinion on another thing!

Unless you are a Trump- fan, that is!

If that happens, you have to defend everything the crook does and eat up everything he feeds you, lovingly!

This is not as far-fetched as most believe.  If the GOP were to lose both the WH and Senate, they know their party is just about done.  Trump has been able to get away with a lot because he had enablers (i.e., McConnell).  So if both Trump and McConnell see themselves losing all that power, who knows what they'll do.  But it'll be fun to watch.

Yes. I agree. Oh course he'll have some kind of twisted excuse that the cult of personality will follow. He's already floated one idea. Because of the "evil" democrats and "enemy of the people" press his first term has been stolen from him so he's due a do over.  Putin couldn't have dreamed of a better return on his investment. Also remember he's not only running for president he's running to stay put of prison.

Another prediction in a long line of the stock market crashing, the economy going into the dumpster, WW3 vs North Korea, WW4 vs China over trade, WW5 vs Iran, Trump robbing the country blind, blah blah blah.

And while those who dislike Trump focus all of their pearl-clutching focus on things like this, the "America First" doctrine marches on -- with NONE of those things happening.

Objective people if they don't know already may wish to do some research on the very dark historical context of "America First" rhetoric in the USA.
