Breaking with Republicans, Romney votes 'guilty' in Trump impeachment trial

Personally, it wouldn't surprise me if Trump were to lose the next election that he would refuse to relinquish the post. Likewise if he did win 2020 that he will attempt to hold on to power past 2 terms. Who is going to attempt to stop him from doing so now? His party have given him a mandate to do what he wants and to hide whatever he wants to hide from overseeing eyes.

Absolutely.  If he wins 2020 listen for chatter from the WH about the 22nd Amendment.

There are three branches of gov't, and he holds 2.5 of them.  If he loses 2020 he's going to cry foul (as usual), probably refuse to concede, and there will be nothing anyone can do.  Military steps in?  Don't think there is no one else weighing this possibility.

He did change something

The first time in US history a vote to remove a president has received bipartisan votes.

And once again, this impeachment is nothing to do with ‘the justice system’.

The witnesses and evidence the GOP Senators refused to hear will be heard.

The GOP Senators have now made the bed they must lie in.

Roll on November.

Yes.

Thank you Mitt.

At least there is one righteous man in the 45 cult of personality party.

It's not even the republican party anymore.

the groundwork has already been set. In the past Trump has commented on Xi Jinping becoming supreme leader of China and how it is a good thing that might be considered. His council in the impeachment trial also opened up the strategy that If Trump does something that he deems is in the interest of the people, it can in no way be illegal.

I personally can never imagine Trump assuming that he is not in the best interest of the people and therefore must stay in power indefinitely. The US has never had its constitution tested in this way. The mob style tactics and cult like propaganda that the resonates with the masses in the US was never really considered. History is now showing that it was assumed by the founding fathers that leaders would act with a sense of morals and decency even if they were doing things underhandedly. They were correct up until 2016.

Trump blatantly lies to the people, belittles all who question him and does as he chooses. The constitution is playing by 'gentleman's rules". Trump is in the gutter fighting with a broken bottle. The constitution as it is doesn't stand a chance.

Well there was that booming economy Obama bequeathed to Trump.

While he will be lauded for guiding the nation off the precipice of a global economic catastrophe and for extricating America from two protracted, inconclusive wars, Obama’s aggressive use of executive power in the face of congressional obstruction imperils his biggest achievements in restructuring health care and the financial sector, immigration reform, environmental protections, labor policy and LGBT rights.

Romney is a hero. The only one who was not lockstep with the dangerous master. I suspect this will help him enormously to get re-elected. As blinded as a part of the American population is right now, by a false prophet, he will be respected for his integrity.

Poor Mitt... I sense some crazy jealousy going on here. But really, who cares? He didn't change anything. The justice system has spoken.

What Justice system are you talking about , NO witnesses and NO documents were allowed so a farce and one sided trial by the Republican's .

But you would still vote democrat every single time, your intent formed entirely on ideology and not on fact.

We are fighting those guys in Iraq, too.

1. The Senate trial is not part of the justice system.  Different co-equal branch of government.

2. The Senate has the freedom to determine if they need more witnesses and/or documents.

3. The House provided transcripts of selected witnesses (still hiding transcripts of some of the secret testimony in the Intelligence Committee).

4. The evidence gathering/witnesses is conducted by the House.  The Senate reviews the evidence and makes determinations from there.

5. A majority vote in the Senate acquitted the POTUS.

What is so painstakingly clear is that Romney saw the same evidence as all the other Republicans and he concluded, beyond doubt, that Trump was guilty as charged.  The majority of Americans see it the same way as Romney and are now even more convinced that the other Republicans engaged in a cover-up.

He had his shot in 2012.

Romney didn't fight for the job, didn't fight for Americans, didn't fight his opponent and didn't even fight for himself and defend his wealth.

I think Mitt is still harboring hurt feelings over his failed campaign in 2012.

And the GOP Senators will need to explain their vote as more evidence of Trump’s crimes emerges.

What the heck does it matter what his history is?  He saw the same evidence as we did and came to the same conclusion...the only rational conclusion.  Unless of course, you're covering up for the Liar-in-Chief.

Perhaps the only senator but in the party, resistance to Trump is growing like the Lincoln Project and the 20+ Reps that will not seek re-election. Party is shrinking and so is Trump’s ambition.

Their vote was based on what was presented to them at the time.  They have already explained their votes publicly near the end of the Senate trial.

If the House thinks they've found what they think is more evidence, maybe they'll go about the process in the correct way this time.  I would think that the public is tired of this; but Democrats are the undisputed Champions of Unintended Consequences.  As Champions, they will be expected to triple-down and quadruple-down on this GET TRUMP agenda because it's all they've got leading into November.

Unfortunately not in the Senate. By being politically tone deaf IMO the republicans just signed the death warrant of their majority in the senate. Nancy  Pelosi played them like fiddle, the intent was never to remove trump, she knew she did not have the votes, the intent was to give the so called republicans the rope to hang themselves with. and all except Romney rook it hook ,line and sinker

Romney has positioned himself as the only available alternative, as trump's political fortunes implode.

What <deleted>!!! Excerpt from latest Gallup Poll, Full poll posted also.

Republican Party Image Also Improving

As Trump's job approval rating has improved, so has the image of the Republican Party. Now, 51% of Americans view the Republican Party favorably, up from 43% in September. It is the first time GOP favorability has exceeded 50% since 2005.

Meanwhile, 45% of Americans have a positive opinion of the Democratic Party, a slight dip from 48% in September.

I would not argue with him if I was you, I think what he is trying to say is that Romney is just as big a creep as trump.

Who would have thought that Romney, an excuse for a human being, would be the only GOP senator with any morals or ethics?

A Don has been cleared by 50+ of his compatriot crooks, so what’s new? USA is all about money and the worshipers of Mammon will in most cases be victorious anyway. Did anyone really expect another outcome in one of the world’s most corrupt countries? Respect to the loner that choose justice in this case.

No. Nobody expected a conviction in the senate.

Anyone that has been paying attention knows that.

However there was the slim hope that there would be enough votes to hear from key witnesses such as Bolton that 45 had previously blocked.

There was also the even slimmer hope that the convict side would win a symbolic majority of votes which wouldn't have removed 45 (as a 2/3 vote is needed for that) but would have been a stronger message.

But Romney voting to convict was better than nothing.
