Wouldnt a power cut in the middle of the night be advantageous?

Can't shoot anybody if you can't see them.

No way to charge phones to see what was happening outside giving a advantage to the forces.

If he is surrounded by hostages holding an automatic assault rifle I imagine it would be to difficult and don't forget about the grenades, that's why they don't have people like you and I deciding what to do.

Thai forces believe shooter in mall basement as death toll hits 21

By Panu Wongcha-um

NAKHON RATCHASIMA, Thailand (Reuters) - A Thai soldier who has killed at least 21 people in a shooting rampage was thought to be holed up in the basement of a shopping mall in northeastern Thailand on Sunday and security forces were closing in on him, a police officer said.

The officer said nine civilians had been evacuated from the shopping mall and security forces were checking whether any remained there.

"The perpetrator is still in the basement and it doesn't look as though he has hostages. We are getting close to him," said the officer who did not give his name because he was not authorised to speak to media.

The killings began at around 3 p.m. (0800 GMT) on Saturday when the soldier opened fire in a house before moving to an army camp and then to the mall in Nakhon Ratchasima in northeastern Thailand, posting messages on Facebook as he went.

Police have identified the suspected shooter as 32-year-old Jakrapanth Thomma.

Overnight, one member of the security forces was killed and at least two others wounded in a raid into the Terminal 21 mall to try to stop the gunman.

"We are doing our best. You can see that all our senior officers of the government have been assigned here," Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters at the scene. "All steps are being taken with precautions so that we can minimize the damage as much as we can."

More than 30 people have been wounded.

Police closed off streets around the mall and kept journalists behind a security cordon.

Thai media said the suspected shooter had worked at an army base close to Nakhon Ratchasima,

which is about 250 km (155 miles) from the capital Bangkok. Before the attack, Jakrapanth had posted on his Facebook account that he was out for vengeance -- but he did not say for what.

'IT APPEARS HE WENT MAD'

"We don't know why he did this. It appears he went mad," Defence Ministry spokesman Kongcheep Tantrawanit told Reuters.

Overnight, soldiers and police stormed into the mall and escorted hundreds of trapped people to safety.

"It was frightening because I could hear the occasional gunshot ... we waited a long time for the police to come and help us, many hours." said Suvanarat Jirattanasakul, 27, her voice trembling after she emerged.

The mall was busy with shoppers on a long weekend for the Buddhist Makha Bucha holiday.

CCTV footage from inside the mall posted on social media showed the gunman dressed in black and wearing a mask, his gun slung over his shoulder with no sign of other people around.

Facebook <FB.O> said it had removed the suspect's account.

"There is no place on Facebook for people who commit this kind of atrocity, nor do we allow people to praise or support this attack," a Facebook representative said in a statement.

Major shootings are rare in the Southeast Asian country other than in the far south, where a decades-old insurgency persists.

Nakhon Ratchasima is one of the biggest cities in northeastern Thailand, an island of relative prosperity in a rice growing area that is one of the poorest parts of the country of 69 million people.

Additionally any Western country would have a trained hostage negotiator in constant one-to-one contact with the perp. The only contact that I have seen is a "negotiator" trading vile insults with the perp and both parties giving it the macho "bring it on". Not very professional.

Will be interesting to learn, if we ever will, how the three special forces guys got shot.

The insult exchange certainly seemed reckless, untrained and dangerous to me. However, we don't know the context of the exchange either.

I don't know much about this Hanuman Commando unit, do they receive ATU training from more established foreign units? If so it's a start.

They are still pulling bodies out as I type.

Just to answer some general comments about snipers etc.

Firstly if you deploy that tactic you run loads of risks:

1. Missing and causing him to panic and start killing people.

2. Hitting and not killing him causing the same as 1.

3. Hitting a hostage not only killing the hostage but also causing 1 again.

Forget about the movies. Anyone who has ever used a rifle will know that hitting a moving target is far from simple. And no sniper or sharp shooter I've ever met would put his hand up in this situation at this point.

You'd also never aim for a 'headshot'. It's too small a target. Combine this with him probably having a ballistic helmet makes is beyond absurd. You aim for the chest area as it has the ability to put someone down and is also a larger target. Again he has ballistic body armour I'd guess so the chances of that working are diminished as well.

The priority will be to get innocent people out safely. And to do that the best option is to wait. If he falls asleep the situation changes but even then you wouldn't have some sharp shooter doing something for a couple of hundred metres away.

Either way the sniper is useful as eyes if he can see the subject and the subject doesn't realize that it is a big advantage. Obviously if he is wearing a helmet things change. He may have a vest on as well. The way you find these things out is through a snipers eyes.

Just seen Farflung write the same. They would know what he took. Unlikely he planned for night vision equipment.

I was saying the same earlier, if the guy is in foodland supermarket, it would not have windows and would be dark, emergency lights would only last 15-20 min.

I heard elsewhere he shot the SWAT with the M60 he pinched, not a bad weapon to hole yourself up with

Even so it would get hot and night vision isn't as good as your sight in normal lighting.

Then what advantage for the rescuers?

if he has NV on, then hit the Mains Power ON... and he'll be albeit temporarily dazzled!

Pretty much the identical statement that ai Anutin made to a C4 news reporter after ripping into "ai farangs". I worry for any hostages.

The Thai national Scrabble association announced on Friday they are going to hold a regional championships at Terminal 21 Korat at the end of May. We have never used that place before.

Glad We were not there with thousands of kids this weekend. I spend a lot of time at weekends in shopping centers. One can imagine the terror especially for people stuck in there all night.

Alternatively watch it on TV. He has a helmet and flack jacket.

I fear the death toll is going to be way higher than the current numbers, They have no idea how many the guy has killed inside the mall, he could literally be finding people hiding in bathrooms etc

Exactly. Only time will tell.
truly tragic event.

It was reported last night he's taken some of the shoppers' mobile devices. All of the Thai channels stream live online too.

He is in a mall, he can go to a phone shop, he could have fired up 10 phones and 5 facebook account by now.
