PM says Thailand will provide supplies to Westerdam cruise ship

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said today that the Government will provide humanitarian aid to Holland America’s Westerdam cruise ship, after it was refused permission to dock at Laem Chabang deep-sea port by Thailand’s Ministry of Transport,.

The ship, which left Hong Kong on February 1st, has already been refused entry to the Philippines and Japan, and numerous ports in Taiwan and Guam, for fear that the passengers may be carrying novel coronavirus.

Thailand’s Prime Minister confirmed the Transport Ministry’s decision to deny the cruise ship entry to Laem Chabang deep-sea port, but said that the Government will provide humanitarian aid such as fuel, food and water. He stressed the need to adopt the same measures applied by the other countries and asked for understanding, noting that there are more than 2,000 passengers and crew on board the vessel.

Okay, I'll start - odds-on that Thailand will offer to sell supplies to the ship.

  • At double the price!

Brits stranded at sea after cruise ship refused entry to Thailand over coronavirus fears

Matilda Long

A cruise ship carrying British nationals has been stranded off the coast of Thailand over coronavirus fears, despite no cases being confirmed on board.

The Holland America Westerdam cruise ship, which has more than 2,000 people on board, has already been turned away by the Philippines, Taiwan and Japan.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are in contact with the Thai authorities and operators of the Westerdam cruise ship, and are ready to support the British nationals on board if required.”

What's wrong with that ? Cruise liners need supplies throughout their trip and expect to pay for them.

Since Thais put money above the safety of their own populace, I'm sure it could dock if they all promised to buy 5,000 baht of something

Pay for what you want and you can demand value.  When it's free you can demand nothing!

Maybe they should restock and sail back to their original port of departure.. longcruise for

the people on board

As has been said previously, if it were a Chinese ship I bet it would be allowed to dock - Thailand double standards once again

Some good somtan poupala pet pet should cure everyone on board.

The PM could sell them some wine to be sure they will never come back????

The news article states Thailand will provide humanitarian aid to the ship.  That's usually donated.

Expecting the ship to pay for "humanitarian aid" would be like the Red Cross offering to sell sandwiches to Ethiopian famine victims.

I might need some help with this one.

Chinese can enter and leave unhindered and the Brits on a vessel which has not docked for a fortnight are ship-locked?

The only correct reaction by the captain of that vessel would be do dump and rinse the tanks loaded with human manure close to the Thai shore - just to drive the message home.

Are you really seeing an equivalency between Ethiopian famine victims and a cruise ship line?

Well he could have said that the same minute that Anutin banned the ship from docking...

Agree that if this cruise ship carried Chinese tourists, the ship would be welcomed to Thailand.

A decree some days ago (which cannot be refuted, denied or even discussed by any Thai) was issued welcoming all Chinese to Thailand. The decree mentioned no other nationality.

You may recall that certain Ministries argued both for and against welcoming Chinese, but suddenly all discussion STOPPED. Case solved: must welcome.

The elder folks (like me) will remember the story of the "MS St. Louis" which, in 1939, could not land (for political reasons) in Cuba, the United States and Canada, because it was carrying 900 Jewish refugees on board. This true story was later wrapped up in a fantastic drama "Voyage of the Damned". They returned to Europe where some 25% of the passengers ended in infamous concentration camps and never left them alive.

The present day case is the opposite; cruising tourists with money, all the food and fun and no religious worries in a non-war environment - yet unable to get off board for (apparent) health reasons despite being absolutely healthy.

But yes, it looks good from a Thai politician's point of view - keep the alien and their (non-)existing viruses out and I would bet my money, that no Thai ever heard of the ill-fated voyage of the St. Louis 81 years ago.

We often took on fresh stores while visiting ports so why not dock and take stores without letting the passengers/crew off ?

Very easy to arrange and no danger to anyone - just allows the passengers to carry on having a luxury holiday for free, perfect I’ll join

Not to mention Hitler, WW2, The Beatles, JFK, landing on the Moon, Twin Towers, Nelson Mandella etc etc etc. You win your bet!

Are you really sure it is the fake Beatles and not the originals?   555

And there are quite a few kids going around with Swastikas on their T shirts. So I was wrong on that as well !   555

No complaints.

Correct decision to not let it dock.

Correct decision to provide aid to the ship.

You's have to be pretty salty to find fault with these decisions.

This is not Thailands problem - they have plenty of others.

...but you would think the ship's Captain would radio ahead before sailing all that way to ask permission...maybe that's just too logical.

Send out Auntie with helicopter to the ship so he can hand out face masks.

They had permission until they had not.

Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines all denied docking to this vessel before Thailand. Suggests there is reason.
