British man launches Go Fund Me page to help with legal bills after fatal traffic accident in Thailand

Teaching English as a volunteer that’s a new one on me . I would assume his bike was insured so why is the insurance company paying up , at least he is not in prison looks like the de eased family will be looking for a far bigger sum of money as Thais think we farangs grow money in the back garden.

If he’s not being charged with an offense, I don’t see what legal reason they (the BiB) have to keep him here.  It seems there is a lot missing from this story.

  • A better photo with the article may garner some sympathy, methinks.

  • So what's the compulsory insurance for then if it's not for compensating 3rd parties?

This is really getting old with people wanting other people to bail them out. The guy is in his fifties and should be able to help himself.

Thx...one of the reasons I avoid as much as I can to drive a car or motorcycle here, a scary thought if it happens to you!

The government insurance is rubbish I always take out private insurance for both my car and motor bike but even with private insurance you need to make sure you read the specified amounts payable before taking it out .

As I understand the facts, the man was driving his motorbike and he hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road.

Where do you read this? From the article: "... driving safely but “could not avoid” the man" means for me, that the old man suddenly stepped out the street without looking (as usual in Thailand). No chance for the driver.

He's an English teacher but by the looks of the GoFundMe-page he's not a native speaker/writer. How does that work?

Likewise how does he get to wear a tag when foreigners are either bailed (££ /no tag) or held on remand?

Just try not to kill anyone and you should be ok people tend to rely too much on insurance these days.

200K if hit on the road by a farang and about half that (110K) if shot down in a shopping center by a Thai. Hmm..

I think the lesson to learn from this is always have around 250 - 500K put a side in case something like this should happen.

Money and an easy target by the sound of it ????

Not at all , for him to be arrested as he tried to leave means he was placed on immigration data base blacklist. I think he either not telling the truth or did not understand what was happening . He is also asking for legal fees yet stating money to pay the family

Not sure I'd go so far as to say he doesn't sound like a native speaker but for an English teacher he shows a shockingly poor grasp of punctuation and grammar. Maybe he was only teaching conversational English but I would pity any Thai taught to write English by him.

I agree.  He's really a plasterer.

Always have between 1 and 3 million put away for emergencies..something like this for example..other legal stuff, health issues and repatriation if necessary.

Otherwise you're swingin' in the breeze.

He read it in the link to the Go Fund Me page, your interpretation of only what was reported in the OP is  irrelevant and wrong.

The judge has the authority, and the discretion, to do that that's how.

There was an arrest warrant that had been issued for him.

Sorry to say that, but if you don't have 200k for emergencies, you shouldn't travel the world, especially at his age.

Yes I do tend to agree...we are only talking about £,5000 of which he has nearly half given to him already----surely he can come up with the rest---- he must earn at least a £1,000 a week in the UK........but he is sitting here paying out money to live...& waiting for others to pay instead of trying to lend from Friends/family there. I don't mean to sound really unsympathetic...but this go fund me page really does get a bashing.

Doesn't have a pot to pi$$ in, but was doing volunteer work ?

Agreed that there is more to this story, if the police accept this as an accident, but, he hasn't stressed who the police are blaming? If it is agreed that the old man stepped into the path of the motorbike, leaving the drive no options to avoid. then the fault is with the old man. then no fee, no charge and he should counter claim for any damage, injury or loss of earnings. if he was driving without basic insurance which covers injury and 3rd party lost. Then he was driving illegally and in fact should not have been there to be involved. so missing is several things ....insurance, and the need to be tagged guides us to that. as to go fund  for lawyer fees why? the amount is way to much for lawyer fees and an australian? suggest you go to court who can suggest a Thai lawyer (They are not all crooks!) sell the motorbike and offer the cash to the family, dealt with at the police station, but, then it sounds as if he has upset them as well?

Shouldn't the "protest" against gofundme and similar be..... don't fund it? If every time someone asks for money from people got old, that would be a long list.

I'm afraid his account of the incident left me scratching my head. He clearly have a lot of time to slow down. He observed the family crossing the road ahead of the old guy. Observed the guy changing his mind and making his way back to the path and then changing his mind again and going for the crossing and in the meantime freezing in the middle of the road. Aren't we taught when driving to slow right down when hazards like this are apparent. To kill a guy on impact means to me he had not slowed down after this observation and was obviously still driving at a speed fast enough to kill someone. Did the guy die of his injuries or perhaps was in poor health and died of other causes?

This is still a tragic accident of course whichever way you look at it but as an afterthought maybe could have been avoided.

Maybe others have more information and hopefully I can be corrected in my thoughts.

The missus just made a suggestion to me. She says why does he not forget about the lawyer take the 2000 quid he raised and pay off the family/police. Job done. I had to laugh but I think she is spot on.

I would sooner fund a helicopter to spirit him away from this corrupt land, where police bid for "Traffic" jobs. Why? They don't issue fines, .. but make a lot of money.

The Thai authorities screw us because they can. Would a Thai motorcyclist who, through no fault of his own, knocks down a pedestrian, be made to pay compensation?

Read the OP link. The guy has been arrested and charged for something. If you read his gofundme page his description of the accident does seem to leave him to be open for a charge of careless driving causing death.

A lot of broken old sods end up here in Thailand. A final escape from a lfe of failures. They don't suddenly become responsible and wealthy on the plane ride over.

MY FRIEND WORKED WITH THIS MAN. This story is not what happened at ALL. We all work for the same agency, and this has become a bit of scandal amongst us all. If you really read his version of the story, there are a lot of things that don't add up. If he had a chance to see everything that the family was doing, how far the elderly man was, why didn't he STOP?

The version that was witnessed by the community, and several other teachers: This man is loose cannon that repeatedly threatened other teachers with violence for the most random reasons. He was definitely speeding when he hit the man, and had kept HONKING prior to hitting him. (If you have time to honk, you definitely have time to hit your brakes.) He hit the man so hard, the man rolled over three times.

There were supposed to be two investigations: the police's investigation, and the family's private investigation. The police one had already finished, and they told him so, but they said to STAY in the country for the other investigation. Everall was ordered to pay 1 million baht for the family-- which he never took responsibility for.

On top of all that, he also skipped out on his rent, his utility bills, and damage fees for throwing cigarette butts on top of cars and leaving burn marks. He was only fired by our agency after he was caught punching some thai university kid in the face during an argument. This guy is INSANE and is definitely playing the victim here.
