Air pollution closes all municipal schools Wednesday until Friday

Biyok-Pollution2.jpg

All schools under the supervision of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) have been ordered closed from tomorrow (Wednesday) until Friday, as air quality in the capital worsened today and the situation is likely to persist due to poor air circulation and accumulation of PM2.5 dust in the atmosphere.

City Hall spokesman Pongsakorn Kwanmuang said today that the city administration will ask high-rise and the electric train construction sites to suspend operations until Friday.

Police have been asked to prevent trucks with six wheels or more from accessing the Ratchadapisek ring road from midday until midnight on Thursday and to set up roadblocks to check vehicle exhaust emissions.

Do children and staff not breathe the polluted air when they are at home, probably out playing? Stop the causes of pollution not prevent children from learning about it!

  • But school in the countryside where the pollution is worse stay open.  Khok Salung, Lopburi us over 200 this morning. The government allows the burning and processing of sugar cane and set the amount

  • Sugar cane lobby sure knows what wheels to grease. Cause and indirect effect beyond government's "skill set". "It's the sugar cane burning, stupid" It's worse in Chiang Mai this morning, btw

When will you start to see this problem as a national problem and not just a Bangkok problem?

What's the point of closing schools ???

Here is at the moment 159!

This is an absolutely appalling disgrace and shame on a supposedly upper middle income country.  Thailand has endangered the health and safety of its citizens and a multi billion dollar tourist industry in exchange for a discount on sugar cane which benefits a few fat cats in and outside government.  To harm your children just to save a few baht!  You reap what you sow!

Bangkok schools closed to avoid PM2.5

Several schools in Bangkok area were ordered to remain closed on February 26-27 by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to avoid air pollution that could affect commuting students and parents.

The Thailand Meteorological Department has forecast that from February 26-28 weak winds and lack of rains in Bangkok and its perimeter areas will worsen dust pollution, especially particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM2.5).

so no mention of crop burning? Oh i forgot the govt banned that didn't they.

As soon as the general extricates himself from last nights parliament and ensuing southern issues and problems he will be along to order it gone????

Closing schools instead of lowering pollution levels? As things stand, Thai students already don't get the education they need! Yet another ridiculous idea.

No schools closed upcountry where the pollution is often worse.  Upcountry kids cannot be as important.

I got a little extra today... house is still smelling after hours

Convenient timing. The pollution isn't much worse than it has been for weeks.

Actually it's doing a photo-op of couple of BiB checking some old truck. You're giving them far too much credit.

How smart they are. I would never have realised that the smog comes from the schools.

So what happened to Prayuts promise to the people?

Pollution was under his control and command?

Going out on a limb, someone is scared of more than just the PM 2.5, maybe it has something to do with an 8 year old with COVID 19, but then I may be entirely off base.

Bought an air purifier for the house today at HomePro. What a difference ! After only 30 minutes it brought the air quality of all particles in the house to the bottom end of the safe green zone. Strongly recommend to buy one if you want to breathe healthy air !

The whole country if covered in a blanket of smog and many areas are far worse than BKK and they are setting up roadblocks Ratchadapisek ring road? ???? That'll fix it! ???? They close the schools in BKK and 200km south where it's presently 168 AQI PM 2.5 they have the children out running around the track! Keeping the children heathy and fit is a priority in LOS (land of smog) ....????

Yes of course it's required equipment when visiting Thailand (and get one for the car!) and be sure to wear a mask at all times when venturing outdoors!

It is under his control.  He sets the percentage of burnt sugar cane that can be processed by the factories.  I think he allows 50% to be burned and processed.  He has complete control!

Maybe an outbreak of the covid-19 under disguise of air pollution.
