if that's the case they wouldn't be eligible for deportation, so long as they had rescinded their NZ citizenship.

She is like most left wingers in Govt - unlikely to stay long as people more and more turn 'right'. Every single one of those people deported to NZ comitted one or more serious crimes - these are

  • I am an Australian by birth, but I support New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on this issue. Scott Morrison is a coal-addicted moron.

  • For all intents and purposes there is a special track for Australians in NZ, it’s called a variation of travel conditions which means you are eligible for PR after 2 years in NZ. It’s cheap and straig

Which was his point. Catch on.

I too hope that the UK initiates a points style system for immigrants, and in my opinion it is well overdue

As for NZ, there has been a type of points style system in operation since the early 1980s (or before?), however it was based on whether the skills of the potential immigrant were those which were required in NZ, or were likely to benefit the country in one way or another. If they weren't, then citizenship was denied.

In principle, I don't have a problem with Australia deporting criminals back to their countries, this especially after it has been stated here that migrants from NZ, residing in Australia, do have a chance to take up Australian citizenship; so they should have done this.

A difficult subject and I'm sure it's not as clear-cut as one would like, and something which springs to mind is the situation where a New Zealand family emigrates to Australia and has a child, which 18 years later commits a crime, so as he is still ostensibly a New Zealand citizen, does he get sent back to NZ??.

Birth gives right to citizenship if one parent is a resident.

Yes. This is the core issue the NZ PM is objecting. From member Samran's post it appears NZ does not deport people who were raised in NZ & then go on to commit serious crime, so one can understand her complaint to OZ govt policy.

That wasn't my question.

Feel free to research it for specifics then. This was the context given in the press conference yesterday.

Can't stand most of them. Biggest whiners on the planet.

Not been my experience. Fill the same size adjacent rooms, one with poms and one with Aussies and guarantee you wouldn't be able to hear a sound coming from the "whinging poms" room due to the whinging from the Aussie's room.

What happened to the Kiwis? The poms must have ate them. Hence the quiet.

Australia deports British man to UK after 40 years

I find the deportation of that man irresponsible as well. He’s our problem, not the U.K.s

I don't. Regards deportation of an individual non citizen who was born / raised in the country of their offending, as well as having no connection with their parent/s original home country should not be deported. I concur with NZ PM POV on this matter.

No he's a Brit. He should go home. Too lazy to become a citizen in 40 years too bad. Back to bangers and mash and bad weather. Ends up in Pattaya next.

The thing that most people miss is that since feb 2001 changes to Australia’s immigration law means that there are limited pathways to becoming a citizen in Australia as a NZ citizen.

Prior to that date NZers who landed in Oz were granted automatic PR, which then let’s you ride out the 4 year time frame you mention to get citizenship.

Following Feb 2001, NZers who land are free to live and work in Australia indefinitely, but have to go through the skilled migration route to first get PR. This rules out a lot of NZs who come to Australia from having a path to citizenship.

For what it’s worth, NZ still puts Australians on the path to citizenship from the moment they land with automatic acquisition of residency rights after one year living there and citizenship an option 4 or 5 year later.

So if it's that difficult to get citizenship, thats even more of a reason to keep your nose clean. I'd like to see all non-citizens who commit a serious crime in UK returned to their country of origin. Everyone has a choice, why should a country want to keep some non-citizen who's committed a serious crime? That Ardern's a real commie.

I didn't entirely agree with it either but nonetheless admired and respected the ???????? for doing so. If anything it woke UK up.

On that we certainly will never agree on. I see no reason whatsoever for a country to let a non-citizen serial offender/serious criminal prey on its citizens.

Well if that's the case, raised in AUS and no connection with NZ, they should take up citizenship before taking up a life of crime.

I can’t see how dumping a home grown problem on someone else’s lap comes close to being admired and respected. It’s just passing the buck.

Chicken and egg. Most of these people come up through the ranks of juvenile crime. They don’t know that they aren’t australian and are often surprised to find out.

Do the crime, do the time for sure, but an addition penalty of deportation because you haven’t got a piece of paper?

I had a british pp with permanent iz residency. Moved to nz to work. No visa required. If u have oz pr then nz deems you the same.

After 45 years living all but 3 years of my life in oz i finally did my citizenship. Then left 2 months later.

I agree with Ardern. The kiwis are for all intents and purposes aussies. Going thru aus schools then working. Oz govt is just passing the buck. They are a product of the oz system and oz should take ownership.

I did like nz very much but 5 years if only a week of summer a year was too much.

Btw, i have 3 passports and also pr of a 4th country. Confusing at times. ????

A bit of similar experience, but lived in Oz on 4 different occasions over the years. Finally entered Oz via NZ. Lived in Thailand approx 4 years. So far around 33 years total in Oz. I have UK, Oz and NZ citizenship

While protecting your own citizens - which is one of the main duties of any government.

I don't know why all the Okkers are going on like feral mongrels...….the vast majority are all descendants of convicts sent out by Mother England in the early/mid 1800s.....hence the acronym POME.....Prisoner Of Mother England....if you look carefully you can still see the shackle marks on some Aussies ????....history tells us that when some had completed their sentences they fled to New Zealand

There was a NZ Prime Minister (I think it was Rob Muldoon)who often said that when a Kiwi left to live in Aus it rasied the IQ in both countries.....

Resident or a citizen?

If both parents never switched to OZ citizenship, then what about the offspring's status?
