BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand recorded a new coronavirus infection, taking its tally to 42 cases since January, a health official said on Saturday.

The victim is a 21-year-old Thai salesman whose job brought him exposure to foreign tourists, the permanent secretary of the health ministry, Sukhum Kanchanaphimai, told a news conference.

Thailand has not yet had a death from the virus, although 28 patients have recovered and 14 are being treated in hospital.

The rapid spread of the coronavirus has fuelled fears of a pandemic, with six countries reporting their first cases this week as the World Health Organization raised its global risk alert to "very high".

Its a world Pandemic without actually being called as of yet but not far away according to WHO and CDC .

Not sure about regular daily increases, normal Thai folk can’t afford to be tested. And they won’t test you unless you’ve been China/japan/Korea. Defies all logic, it’s all about money again, but it’ll be Thailand’s downfall unfortunately, as they’ll lose way more when the economy collapses. Korea is testing about 50,000 per day.

#42 exposure to foreign tourists of coarse you think there going to say which foreign nationality.

When is the wet season in Thailand?

Not looking forward to it.....

Yes fear creates panic, but what is the panic about, nothing more than another strain of influenza which kills 500,000 plus people a year worldwide, but we don't hear of that, do we.

If your old, 80+ and have a weak immune system, or have a pre-existing respiratory condition or diabetes, I would be worried to go out until a vaccination is made, as for the rest of us, soldier on as tomorrow you could get bitten with a mosquito and get Malaria which kills around a million, yes a million people a year, or if you get influenza it kills 500,000 + a year, road deaths 1.25 million a year. Now do you feel better ?

I would be more worried about winter in Thailand come Nov/Dec, as for the wet season, I think it's May to July, if we get any rain as I heard the rain man got the Coronavirus and died, but that is on the hush, hush ????

I was not recorded in January with testing positive.

But, last monday I was recorded as positve and cured as of 24 Feb.

Ha ha ha the real reporting is a thai lie.

Kuweit 45 - Thailand 42 .. We’re catching up.

No. They will quarantine all western [no more Chinese] tourists, for 4 weeks and charge 1500 thb pr day, afterwards pay overstay and inflated airfare out of the country.

Ai Farang, som nam na.

This is just an example, but if a Thai ladyboy was working in Pattaya, it would be impossible to know the nationalities of his customers.

Bit of a problem with the flu comparison, this virus is at least 20x the death rate, lives a long time on surfaces and has a very long period with no symptoms while you can infect many others. It is more likely to kill you if you are older but not just the old, the Dr who discovered it and who had the best attention in his own hospital died in his 30's, as have many others. Everything is certainly not going to be back to normal in a month, no matter how many are killed on the roads or by malaria.

In other news, around 60 people will die today on Thailand’s roads and for some strange reason everyone keeps driving and no preventative measures are put in place.

A bit like HIV and AIDS innit.

How many people are walking around with HIV right now? How many of them practice safe sex? How do we know? What are the authorities doing to isolate and treat positive cases?

Interesting to compare Thai (and world) responses to each affliction.

what about anybody working in airports, shopping malls, restaurants or just a trip on the bts ?

A friend working in Patpong told me this week that there is plenty of Chinese tourists in Patpong. As i was surprised as i thought they were stopped she told me "they're all around". So, as she is reliable, i suppose there is still more Chinese tourists in Thailand than we can think. Which doesn't mean that all of them are infected by the virus, of course.

I don't think drawing comparisons to seasonal flu or influenza is helpful and trivializes the threat posed by this virus.

Trivializing this will not help people taking this seriously and by extension will likely increase the r0 value of this virus leading to more infections.

I think we can both agree that anything that increases the number of infections is a negative thing, especially for those groups more vulnerable to losing their lives to this. They deserve our cooperation to help protect them too.

Ignorance. That's the key word.

It's the beginning. It's on the radar since... less than 2 months.... We don't have all the data, far from it.

We discover stunning "properties"... case by case... but the "feel good brigade" is still out.

Be humble, and you might be... safe.

You heard -perhaps- about reinfection... right ? That's the latest crazy thing about this virus.

China... Japan (3 cases)... and now : South Korea.

Try to think about this... Reinfection.

You clogg the healthcare infrastructure for one full month (equipment, staff, constant care)... They save you. You are cleared... Go back home.... Catch it again.

Yeah. You're about right : ignorance is a terrible as the motto "get the correct visa !"

We had climatechange deniers, and now also pandemic/Covid19 seriousness deniers. Difference is that the truth (and consequences) on Covid19 will be out very soon.

Compared to the seasonal flu, SARS-CoV-2 (1) spreads faster; (2) kills far more; (3) is harder to control; (4) requires use of far more medical resources; (5) for far longer a period of time; (6) has no effective treatment; and (7) can infect entire populations (no herd immunity).
These factors mean that SARS-CoV-2, if left unchecked, is far more likely to overwhelm a country's medical infrastructure. Additionally, when medical infrastructure is overwhelmed, the mortality will skyrocket because we know that 20% of cases require medical intervention.
It doesn't take a genius to piece it all together. This virus is devastating if containment measures fail. Far far worse than the seasonal flu.

Bigger problem is that general medicine manufacturing has been stopped or on the minimal level in China. Almost all components or medicines are manufactured in China, penisilin and antibiotics will be hard to get after few months if factories are not resuming production. At least farang prices will be times X compared what they are now. Of course, elite will get their share and others what is left. Therefore it might be different thing to get everyday infections than now.

Just wonder why entertainment sector has not impacted and reporting any cases? Corona does not like Thai ladies?
