As a measure to contain the Covid-19 outbreak, the Ministry of Education ordered affiliated authorities to sanitise areas in schools and educational institutions nationwide and strictly follow the ministry’s instructions.

Permanent Secretary and Spokesperson Prasert Boonruang said the ministry expected the outbreak to intensify.

“Staffers from the Office of Permanent Secretary have cleaned and sprayed disinfectants in the ministry's premises to prevent spread of the virus,” he said.

“Moreover, the office also set up sanitising points for people coming to the ministry to wash their hands.

The ministry has expanded its measures to control and prevent the spread of Covid-19, such as asking schools and educational institutions nationwide to postpone boy scout and Red Cross youth activities until the situation returns to normal, closely monitor the situation and follows the ministry's guidelines, he said.

“We ask schools and educational institutions which have held the final examination to close the semester and use media to contact students,” he said.

“Also, we have told Educational Service Area Offices nationwide to contact related authorities, such as Local Administrative Organisations, to clean schools and educational institutions”.

He added that the Minister of Education Natthaphon Theepsuwan had ordered the Office of Vocational Education Commission to produce face masks for distribution to schools and educational institutions in five regions. Each region will be given 10,000 pieces, totaling 50,000 pieces.

Students who sat for the Ordinary National Education Test (O-Net) exam on February 29 were all given face masks,he added.

Yes good idea because most of the schools are disgustingly dirty

Not any school I've taught in. Maybe lots of germs bc of kids but I've only been sick once in six years. I've never missed school due to illness.

I used to teach at many Thai schools and can confirm from my many unfortunate experiences how filthy, dirty, unhyginic school ground plus working conditions were during my attempts at trying to teach Thai students.

One school I used to teach at in Khon Kean had such filthy classes, I plus other foregine teachers ended up cleaning the classrooms ourselves after our failed attempts at asking the school to action the cleaners to clean such fithy areas.

I've photo graphic evidence to support my claims.

Thai in general are filthy. Look at thier dwellings, work places, streets etc.. The evidence is everywhere to be seen.

Land of Paradise!!! What a joke!

The school in which I teach is clean enough. The "maids" are pretty effective.

The anti virus steps taken last week were all for show however. A pair of senior teachers came into my classroom towards the end of a lesson. They first of all bollocked the children (and me) for not wearing facemasks - despite the fact that they have been virtually unobtainable here in Chiang Rai for the last month. The impact of that ticking off was somewhat reduced by their voices being muffled by the face masks which they, alone amongst all the staff and children had obtained ( I had noticed earlier a box of them in the "Academic Room" in which they are based)!

They then solemnly presented the class (10 year olds!) with a plastic washing up bowl, a small bottle of disinfectant and two bottles of water and told them to deep clean the classroom. No gloves, clothes, sponges or anything else!

Photographs were duly taken to appear on Facebook... "XYZ School battles the Corona virus!"

After they had left to continue their clowns tour of the school, I explained to the children that the best thing to do would be to pack a bar of soap in a plastic bag in their school bags and to wash their hands at every opportunity.

I don't think they appreciate how daft they were being - their efforts were utterly superficial, and served only to alarm some of the children. The whole exercise was about as useful as a chocolate teapot! I suppose it is being repeated nationwide - everything is 100% under control...

Cancelling "summer school" and keeping the children out of school for a couple of months is however a good idea, although it will cause problems over childcare for working parents.
