Pattaya: Hopes for tourism dashed - three big events cancelled amid fears of spread of Covid-19

Pattaya's mayor has announced that three large scale events in the resort in March and April have been cancelled. 

 

Sontaya Khunpluem was speaking after a meeting to discuss requests from the Health Ministry about cancelling large public gatherings to safeguard public health in the wake of the coronavirus/Covid-19 outbreak. 

 

The events that have been axed are the 10th St Patrick's Day Parade due to be held on March 17th, Pattaya Music slated for March 20/21st and the Tropixx Music Festival that was organized for April 10th and 11th. 

 

Thaivisa notes that large events were envisaged as potential saviors for the devastated tourism in Pattaya but even this in now looking like being a false hope.

CoVir-19, water shortages across the country, in Pattaya Nongpure mayor predicates water in reservoir will be empty by June if no rain. No reason to cancel Songkran. lol 

 

Suggest Songkran go ahead but only traditional water ceremony with the elders. Pour scented water in their hands and a bit on the head for a blessing.

Well, I hope you're right. I've never liked the Songkran (1 day would be ok) but a week or more is just insane.

The Thais are much more afraid of the virus than foreigners are

What's the rest of the world think of Thailand when they see pictures tens of thousands of Songkran revellers packing the streets while their own countries prudently ban such events. Who will want to visit Thailand after the mass exposure held throughout the country? I hope the WHO, UN, ASEAN and other international bodies condemn Thailand's plans to hold the event. If the worst case scenario happens and the coronavirus runs rampant in Thailand, how much sympathy or aid will it get from the rest of the world?

They won't cancel Songkran.  The water selling mafia will not allow it.  They flog water from a ditch to farang boys of all ages at the same price as a bottle of Moet.

The world's biggest wet T-shirt competition will go ahead, drought not withstanding.
