A 43-year-old British business adviser who arrived in Bangkok from London on February 29 after changing flights in Hong Kong has been confirmed as Thailand’s 48th case of the Covid-19 virus.

Public Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr Sukhum Karnchanapimai announced the news on Friday (March 6).

The Briton was admitted to a private hospital on March 3 with high fever and a cough and was later transferred to an institute specialising in respiratory disorders.

A 30-year-old female migrant labourer just returned to Thailand from overseas is suspected of being infected and is undergoing tests at the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute in Nonthaburi.

The 48 confirmed cases in Thailand thus far break down to 16 still being treated in medical facilities, 31 recovered and one dead.

Indeed, I never understood the "ants in pants' thing.

Is that why you travel?

Because many people want to get to a place for a funeral, sick relative, wedding, business, etc.

They have good/legit reasons to want to be someplace.

You must have a very good reason to go to Northern Italy or Wuhan for example :cheesy:

If they cared they would set up free-test sites around the country, to test 20, or 40 or 50,000 a day, set up extra ICU beds, so not to disrupt other patients, looking at 80-90% mild cases, and 10% needing hospital care, everyone around doesn’t believe the numbers, just like CCP china, they have the money $2-3 billion from the IMF $50 billion to pay for administrating the aid of the virus, they just going back into their gangster shells, hoping it all goes away, and they still be in charge when it’s all done, and earn more billions of dollars

If, as I take it, they have been given a cash grant to help with fighting the virus, then that could explain a certain lack of transparency...

43yo man has got to be a worry, no mention of existing health conditions means game on for everyone

Anyone can catch this, his age merely suggests that he is at a low, but not non existent risk of getting a severe reaction.

Chances are he will be just fine but it's important to limit spread. This guy is doing the right thing!

so correct me if I am wrong

of all the cases in Thailand only one has been a local infected in Thailand - a taxi driver

all the other cases Thailand seems to be claiming were infected before they arrived in Thailand...……………...Came from London - transfer Hongkong, pretty much every tourist came from somewhere - were they infected before arriving

How many Thais have been infected in country - apparently only one, a taxi driver

assuming you are correct (does not correcting you) all cases but 1 in Thailand could have been avoided, if the (stingy) PM had restricted incoming travelers..... and that makes us feel (much) worse

And what about... Malaysia ?

We forget them.

Today + 28 cases !

Total 83...

When Thailand has officially... 48 cases.

Damned ! Again the good luck, the som tam, the... heu... warm weather perhaps ?

????

Malaysia must've had a freak cold spell due to climate change. Or they've gotten their hands on some testing equipment instead of sending the samples to the back of the weeks long queues at Thailand's WHO reference labs.

Don't know why I didn't look for this before.. here's a video of the RT-PCR procedure:

And here are the instructions from NIH: https://www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/conventional-rt-pcr-followed-by-sequencing-for-detection-of-ncov-rirl-nat-inst-health-t.pdf?sfvrsn=42271c6d_4

Doesn't include sampling, but that's how a diagnosis works. Nothing there tells me it takes days to execute it.

EDIT: more info on currently available test methods: https://www.the-scientist.com/news-opinion/how-sars-cov-2-tests-work-and-whats-next-in-covid-19-diagnostics-67210
