Trump suspends all travel from Europe to the United States to fight coronavirus

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Under pressure to act, President Donald Trump on Wednesday suspended all travel from Europe to the United States for 30 days starting on Friday in order to fight the coronavirus.

Trump said the travel restrictions did not apply to the United Kingdom. He did not provide a list of countries but said simply the restrictions applied to all of Europe.

The president, who faces re-election in November, took the dramatic step in a somber Oval Office speech as he battles to address the health and economic shocks to Americans and responds to mounting criticism that he has underplayed the threat from the mushrooming coronavirus crisis.

“We are marshalling the full power of the federal government and the private sector to protect the American people," he said.

"This is the most aggressive and comprehensive effort to confront a foreign virus in modern history.”

As the U.S. stock market took another hit from the virus on Wednesday, Trump said he would take emergency action to provide financial relief for workers who are ill, quarantined or caring for others due to the illness.

He said he was instructing the Treasury Department to defer tax payments without interest or penalties for certain businesses and individuals affected.

Trump added he was also instructing the Small Business Administration to provide capital and liquidity to firms affected by the virus.

Come on! It is not April 1 yet.

Not from UK, hey ...? Sounds like the Echelon is alive and well !

Supposedly Jared is in charge of the CV-19 "issue" now.

Consider your confidence suitably inspired.

Teleprompter Trump seems very "low-energy". He needs a pickmeup.

Well that kind of defeats the purpose of a travel ban.. Plenty of European transit U.K on business trips !!

Seems like the governments around the world are actually encouraging this natural culling through sheer incompetence or ignorance...

He was right the UK is at the front of the queue.

Joking aside, this seems like a sensible response considering the spread of the disease and the country where it originated from didn't do this, when they should have.

For all the "nay sayers' maybe he has just saved a family member of yours. Forget your political allegiances and think of the greater good.

I will admit his diplomacy could improve - but he is not a seasoned politician

A more useful action would be provide the testing kits the nation needs and start gathering accurate data on the spread of the disease in the US.

Hes not "my man", but he evidently  is your nightmare. And you too have shown yourself a hater, but here lets try just to make sure: Do you associate any of the following terms with a person that votes for Trump or have you ever used such a term: rascist, uneducated, smelly walmart people, sexist, xenophobic, deplorable, brainwashed, cult, stupid? Yes? Hello hater!

O yes and by the way, when was the last time you posted ANYTHING on this board that wasnt a paen to your candidate or a critisism of Trump.

As travel bans can help to slow down the spread of the virus it seems inconsistent to me to exclude GB.

The report is not clear about who is banned from travelling to the US now. Are all Europeans banned or are they good to go whne flying in from London? That would be even more inconsitent then.

A message of "unity"? Of reaching out to the other side?

At this point it's just a knee-jerk reaction as there really is no way to defend the president's varied and schizophrenic response to this crisis. He can't attack a virus so he's simply left to look impotent.

The image of him with no clothes - OK I'll spot him a full Depends - is something you can't un-imagine.

Although devin nunes does seem to want nude photos of trump?

Another reason to vote him out.

So Trump finally admits that he was wrong all along.  The COVID won't just magically "go away" and it is in fact a serious public health matter.  All of his lying could never have changed that.  Trump is frequently wrong about a great many things, too many to list here.  But this is one of the few times that he was forced to eat crow so quickly and publically.  It's good that Americans are seeing now how unfit this guy is.  November can't come soon enough because Trump needs to go post haste.

Everything is fine its all a hoax. Remember Trump told me so.

A post using a trolling a representation of Mr. Trump's name has been removed.

Some off topic posts and replies have been removed.

So it begins... NBA suspends season, Tom Hanks and wife get Covid-19 in Australia, (summertime there so don't think spring will stop it in the US). etc.

Speech written by StevenMiller as reported by the media. Sniping at Europe for failing to stop travel from China and taking about his marvelous 3 years of QE boost to the economy are all in order. Wonder what will his speech like without the script and will he still be shaking hands.

Excluding the UK is bizarre on the face of it. The UK has had more deaths than Germany.

Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands have around the same number of cases of the UK, which has 459.

Czechia, Belgium, Austria, Greece, Iceland, Finland, Portugal, Slovenia, Romania, Poland, Luxembourg, Hungary, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Malta, Lithuania, Estonia, all have less cases than the UK.

But the UK is excluded, whilst they're banned?

Must be the 5-Eyes pay-off. Well done Britain.

It's okay, I never wanted to go the US anyway. Especially as they now have 1311 cases themeslves. But the bizarre policies are interesting.

He could make testing kits available, ask Congress to pass emergency funding to reimburse all doctors, clinics and hospitals that provide testing free to anyone who requests it, and additional funding to compensate people diagnosed with the virus who self-quarantine without pay (hourly workers without benefits).

Nah...that's too much work.  Travel bans are easy.
