'People are terrified': Daily life on hold as Americans face coronavirus threat

What is driving this asinine panic? I really do not see the danger in this virus, at least no more than any other disease.

What it comes down to is you have people who think they will be locked down in place like in China, and they are afraid that there daily routine and life will be upset, kids can not go to school, people can not work, the economy was already slowing, and now the uncertainty of life as they knew it possibly not moving forward from their own narrow views.  I agree its had a lack of clarity and openness all over the world as far as the spread and number of true infections. Its the fear of the unknown that have people puckered, instead of living one day to the next and getting on with life.  We live in a world of what can you do for me, no one ever is prepared except a small percentage.  Every time some epidemic arises the preppers go crazy, and the world is ending.....time for people to suck it up and rely on themselves and take it for what it is,,,,an unknown....so live life.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - CORONAVIRUS

Last evening dining out with friends, one of their uncles, who's graduated with a master's degree and who worked in Shenzhen Hospital (Guangdong Province, China) sent him the following notes on Coronavirus for guidance:

1. If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold 2.

Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose.

3. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a temperature of just 26/27 degrees. It hates the Sun.

4. If someone sneezes with it, it takes about 10 feet before it drops to the ground and is no longer airborne.

5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours - so if you come into contact with any metal surface - wash your hands as soon as you can with a bacterial soap.

6. On fabric it can survive for 6-12 hours. normal laundry detergent will kill it.

7. Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses. Try not to drink liquids with ice.

8. Wash your hands frequently as the virus can only live on your hands for

5-10 minutes, but - a lot can happen during that time - you can rub your eyes, pick your nose unwittingly and so on.

9. You should also gargle as a prevention. A simple solution of salt in warm water will suffice.

10. Can't emphasise enough - drink plenty of water!

THE SYMPTOMS

1. It will first infect the throat, so you'll have a sore throat lasting 3/4 days 2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about 5/6 days further.

3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing.

4. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind. You feel like you're drowning. It's imperative you then seek immediate attention.

SPREAD THE WORD - PLEASE SHARE.

Luckily, my body temperature is substantially higher than 27 degrees (even in celsius) so I'll be sleeping easy in my bed tonight.  I'll keep the air con off as well, though, just in case....

Don't remember this much hand wringing over the Chinese having their lives affected. Guess they're a tougher bunch of people.

Hope that kid has a good bar mitzvah though, it's important.

The conflation of Covid-19 with seasonal flu is TOTALLY BOGUS.

Why?

The entire human population has zero resistance to Covid-19.

The most optimistic data (out of South Korea which credit to them has done massive testing) shows Covid-19 fatality rates at least TEN TIMES higher than seasonal flu and it could be much higher than that.

This virus does have the potential to infect the majority of humans in a very short time (without aggressive efforts to slow it down). This virus is EXTREMELY infectious. Unchecked cases rise in an EXPONENTIAL manner.

So at least a .5 percent (and possibly much higher) death rate for the majority of humans. Do the math. Not to mention societies and medical systems will totally break down if the masses of sick people happen over a short time period.

Yes but you dont die by percentages. Seasonal flu claimed 150,000 lives this year, CV 4000 in the same period. It doesn't matter what the bloody percentage is, they're still dead. Count the bodies man.

Unless.......drum roll.....you're a politician, then I apologise for 27,6% of what I said and offer another 29% in mitigation and I think you're only 22% of a c................

What sensationalist nonsense.

I am in regular touch with friends and family in the US.

Not a single one is "terrified" nor do they know anyone who is.

People have a lot of practical concerns about the effects on the economy, availability of goods and services etc. Some are legitimately quite worried about their incomes, ability to travel etc. But "terrified?" No.

It's just the Donald as we know he is terrified by germs ....and falling poll ratings...

The other issue is with ER and beds coming under siege with high numbers of very ill people all the other ailments that might have some respite in normal times are then life threatening , strokes, heart attacks , COPD and the rest so the consequential death toll is much higher. In  each country without a severe and sustained lock down then the hospitals rapidly get overwhelmed and dysfunctional. This is now a 'known known'.

I am of the opinion that the Thai diet has created a population of immunologically strong people combined with hot weather means they have been relatively spared the ravages of the virus. In the US the extreme opposite is the case and I fear the grim reaper and a private healthcare system will see the end of a million or more Americans and in quick succession. These are serious times indeed.

Oh puleaseeee!  Bit over the top don't you think?  The worry right now is not a large numbers of deaths.  The common flu is still by far a much more deadly virus.  The worry is that healthcare systems are overwhelmed with mildly sick people and therefore the system will not be able to cope with people who are more seriously sick.  Not just with this but for other reasons.  That is the worry.  So no, you are not going to see some sort of plague with people walking around neighbourhoods yelling "bring out your dead" like some Monty Python sketch!

No, the worry is that Trump's got Jared Kushner crowd sourcing responses to a global pandemic on Facebook.

You could always rent the redundant ones off the Chinese? 64,000 people are well and have gone home now. You could rent their beds? China just built more hospitals. Why can't vibrant world leader America? We're told we have so much to be thankful for so build some more hospitals. Adapt. Improvise. You have the model right here in China.

When you put a crime family in charge of the White House this is what you get. Off the scale of bad. Time for a constitutional coup via a 25. Pence can be a figurehead as long as wise heads rule the crisis from now on.

Wolff writes: “Trump was vulnerable because for 40 years he had run what increasingly seemed to resemble a semi-criminal enterprise.”

He then quotes Bannon as saying: “I think we can drop the ‘semi’ part.”

Agree mostly but Article 25 is constitutional and not a coup. But it can't happen as he's surrounded himself with mindlessly loyal syncophants. By design.

Not sure how 25 would work in practice the world and particularly the US isn't in a good place at the moment with a President that is making the situation considerably worse.

His cabinet needs to agree to it. They won't. Even if they wanted to, he's fire anyone disloyal beforehand.

This 25th amendment nonsense is a horrible coping mechanism. It was not meant to soothe people disappointed by the results of an election. It is designed for instances of presidential incapacitation- for which there is simply no evidence.

What matters is that the stock market was propped up long enough for the ruling elite's to take their money and literally run to the safety of their bunkers. And now the rest of us 99% get to ride this out in a failing, hollowed out empire.

How do you figure?  You are free to buy and sell on public exchanges just like the big boys.  It's usually the small investors that panic and do the wrong thing and the large professional investors take advantage of that.  But it's not some conspiracy.  At least not in the well regulated public exchanges. In private equity that's a whole other thing.

The level of communicated garbage seems to have increased in the last few weeks.   Most of it from the liberal,  socialist and communist drips that hate Trump and Co with a vengeance.  Like water off a ducks back he sheds the criticism and false claims at every turn.  Great!   I'll enjoy seeing him return for 4 more years!

The US has just released models showing 1 million plus could die of the COVID19 virus, in the US alone if they do not start to do things immediately.  California has just shut all schools in line with other States.
