A Chinese man who fell to his death from the sixth floor of a Bangkok hotel on Friday (March 13) was allegedly in possession of a large quantity of protective facemasks.

Police found the 39-year-old dead on the ground outside the hotel in Huai Khwang district. The window of his room above was broken.

Working with the Department of Disease Control, officers learned that the victim came from Fujian, which is among cities battling a Covid-19 outbreak, and arrived in Chiang Rai on March 5.

He checked into the Bangkok hotel on Thursday.

A medical team was requested from Ramathibodi Hospital to collect the body but, lacking the necessary protective equipment in case the deceased was contagious, the procedure had to be delayed.

another loose end tied up on the mask scandal.

I think he was involved in a struggle with another person regarding the resale of face masks in China and he got 'pushed' outside the window. Note that the window was broken.

There is a huge demand for face masks in China now.

Big question is, if he was from Fujan, why was he allowed into Thailand on March 5th?

No there isn't.

Why wouldn't he be? Restrictions didn't start until this week, and Fujian wasn't a high risk area.

Sad to read of anyone's unnecessary death.

That said, is there anything more bone stupid than fighting - and perhaps killing - over face masks that do absolutely nothing to protect the wearer?

Still, as they say, 'there ain't no cure for stupid'.

sound like a business deal gone wrong

money No 1

That's not a good sign, considering that Ramathibodi is one of the main govt. hospitals in BKK, and they aren't well enough equipped to be able to collect ONE potential CV exposed body???

Meanwhile, on the broader subject -- another story re Chinese, CV masks and Thailand.  That seems to be a recurring, underworld deals theme here lately.  And probably helps explain why there's effectively NO masks to be found in local stores for Thai citizens (or others) to purchase.

Quote

BANGKOK — A lawyer on Thursday said a group of politicians was involved in a conspiracy that led to scarcity of face masks in Thailand and then sold them at overpriced fees for profits.

Atchariya Ruangrattanapong, the combative chairman of the Help Crime Victim Club, submitted his allegations in a letter to deputy police commissioner Gen. Suwat Chaengyodsuk and urged him to prosecute the politicians, whom he refused to name to the media.

Atchariya would only say two of them were a “female politician,” and an advisor to a Cabinet member. The lawyer said the group was colluding with 14 private companies to hoard masks from the market, resulting in a shortage, only to sell them later.

What better way to silence someone when there is 'apparently' and investigation going on.  Too risky to let him live to sing like a birdy about who he bought the masks from.

Was he a buyer or a seller?

As I understand it, China has enough masks and has lifted the ban on exporting them.

On the other hand, Thailand has a shortage - and masks are being sold here at multiple times their former cost.

Would be interesting to get the Thai-Chinese Health Minister's take on this!
